Hello my name is Kaelys Nazario. I am a first year teacher; I am teaching in a self contained Special Day Class that consists of 6th, 7th and 8th graders. During the day I teach 5 class periods; English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science and a Learning Intervention class.
I am a mother of 4 and have been a foster parent in the past. I have a background in children's mental health and have worked with at risk youth in the juvenile justice system and in the foster care system for a combined 15 years. I was born in New York City and received most of my schooling moving back and forth from New York City to California. I attended high school for 1 year in New York City and graduated from high school in Salinas, Ca. I attended community college in Salinas, Ca and graduated from Cal State Monterey in 2023.
Becoming a teacher was a decision deeply rooted in my own experiences with education. School was never easy for me, no matter how hard I tried. But through those struggles, I learned the value of patience and perseverance. I discovered that there are many different ways to learn, and that understanding this can make all the difference for a struggling student.
One of the things I've been told repeatedly is that I have the patience of a saint. This patience isn't just a personality trait; it's a skill I've developed through years of working with youth in my community who face various challenges in their learning. I've learned that everyone has their own unique way of understanding and processing information, and I'm committed to finding the approach that works best for each individual.
Another reason I chose to become a teacher is because I am deeply troubled by the school-to-prison pipeline. I've seen firsthand how it affects at-risk youth, many of whom have mental health or learning disabilities. It's heartbreaking to witness bright, capable young people slip through the cracks simply because the traditional education system isn't equipped to meet their needs. As a teacher, I'm determined to do everything in my power to break this cycle and provide all my students with the support and resources they need to succeed.
