Wildfire Resilience Workshop

This CSU Extension-hosted event is designed to equip residents of Norwood and Telluride with actionable strategies for wildfire preparedness, response, and recovery. Featuring local experts and CSU Specialist Robin Young, this gathering will provide essential knowledge, resources, and tools to enhance wildfire resilience in our communities.

9:00 AM – Welcome & Introduction with Robin Young

9:15 AM – Wildfire Risk Reduction for Homeowners (Leigh Robertson, West Region Wildfire Council)

• Wildfire Risk Reduction Around Your Home, Apartment or Property 

• Programs available to help homeowners mitigate wildfire risk.

• Key wildfire-related issues currently in the news.

10:15 AM – San Miguel County’s Wildfire Disaster Preparedness Manual (Shannon Armstrong, SMC Emergency Manager)

• Rollout and introduction of the revised Disaster Manual.

• Essential preparedness strategies for residents.

11:15 AM – Fire Response & Community Impact (Fire Chiefs John Bockrath, Norwood Fire & John Bennett, Telluride Fire)

• Norwood Fire Protection District - Wildland Resources - Equipment, Personnel, Mutual Aid Agreements

• Response - Initial Wildland Fire Response, Wildland/Urban Interface Response, Sheriff's Office

• Private Agreements - Heavy Equipment, Water Use

• Safety - Fire Personnel, Residents, Community

• Strategy for Defensible vs. Non-defensible - Prep and Hold, Standalone, Prep and Leave, Drive-by

12:15 PM Post-Wildfire Recovery & Reclamation (Robin Young, CSU Extension Natural Resources Specialist)

• Steps for safely returning to a property after a fire.
