About the College

Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Charitable Trust is founded and patronized by His Holiness Sri Sankaracharya Swamiji of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. The Trust is instituted by His Holiness for the purpose of the upliftment of the poor, to provide quality higher education to the rural people. SRI SANKARA ARTS & SCIENCE COLLEGE established in 1991 to provide liberal education to the rural folk and to promote among the youth the highest and loftiest ideals that constitute the essence of our culture there by enabling them to face the challenges of the world and to become worthy citizens of our Great Bharath. Affiliated permanently to the glorious University of Madras, the college offers job-oriented courses with an emphasis on discipline, dedication, dexterity and diligence. Apart from coaching, the college believes in inculcating our cultural, ethical, legendary, moral and spiritual values, which alone will sustain a person in leading a meaningful life.

Department of Biotechnology

The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2006 by the golden hands of His Holiness Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal and His Holiness Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal. The affiliation to both the B.Sc and M.Sc Biotechnology was gained at one stroke and at the very initiation and we owe much to the University of Madras for this. And in 2015 the department become research department and the Doctoral programme has been started in 2017. Right from the inception, the department has been very clear in its goal that is “Steering its services with the motto of universal enlightenment.” Accordingly, it has been offering advanced laboratory services like HPLC analysis, UV-Vis Spectral studies, plant and animal tissue culture, 16S rRNA amplification, Fluorescence Microscopy, Magnetically Activated Cell Sorting facilities and fermentation using New Brunswick Bioflow- 110. Also have recent licenses for advanced software like SRL Autodock and Pathway tools for Metacyc maps the direction of our advancement. The growth is spontaneous and tremendous we have bioinformatics Centre comprising 30 system and 8 Mbps internet connection. The department had signed MoU with Kavins biotech Chennai for QA and QC programme, where the student get exposure to industrial oriented courses.

Objective

The field of biology is always a zone of passion that explores the unexplored. The fascination for science increases, when in-depth understanding is attained. The “BIOTECHNOLOGY” covers a wide range of procedures for modifying living organisms according to human purpose, going back to domestication of animals, cultivation of the plants and in modern age uses of genetic engineering as well as cell and tissue culture technologies. Biotechnology-research and development in the laboratory using bioinformatics for exploration, extraction, exploitation and production from any living organisms and any source of biomass by means of biochemical engineering where high value-added products could be planned, forecasted, formulated, developed, manufactured and marketed for the purpose of sustainable operation and gaining durable patents rights.
