Maybe people have different opinions on this topic. I firmly believe that children under 13 should not have social media for many reasons. Children under 13 are still kids, their mental health has not developed fully, they can experience inappropriate things, cyber bullying. There could be many risks to having social media.
Health/brain development
Kids under 13 years old are still developing their mental health. Their brains are still growing and they are still learning how to express their emotions. With their brain still developing it forms neural connections quickly, which helps children to learn how to process feelings and react to stressful situations/stress. They learn most of these things by daily interactions and having social media could stunt brain development due to excesive screen time. Social media is also known to reduce sleep. Social media can also give you depression and addiction. Depression can be triggered by cyberbullying after posting online, while addiction can stem from excessive screen use.
Inappropriate behavior
Children who own social media are more likely to encounter older people who are pretending to be younger than they seem. This could also lead to trust issues and more insecurities. Social media makes things seem better than they actually are. This could lead to a wrong view of the world due to all the lies they have encountered on the internet. Around 1 in 5 children have experienced harassment on the internet. Many adults do not have the time to watch everything their kids do on the internet due to work or just personal lives. This can lead to kids being kidnapped or worse. Older people can try to manipulate kids online and get information about their personal lives. This can put the kids and the whole family at risk.
Cyber bullying
Cyber bullying is a severe and damaging issue for youth on social media. Roughly 30-46% of youth experience cyberbullying or online harassment at some point in their lives. Cyber bullying causes serious emotional, mental, and physical harm because online attacks happen 24 hours a day and can feel impossible to escape. Victims often experience deep sadness, constant worry, and panic due to this. Repetitive negative comments destroy a kid's self-esteem & body image. It has been common these days that kids online have also been having suicidal thoughts because of Cyber bullying, it can lead to self-harm and increased suicide attempts. Stress and the compulsive urge to check devices frequently lead to sleep disturbances, including insomnia, fatigue, and nightmares.
Conclusion
To conclude, kids under 13 should not have social media because of their mental health/brain development, inappropriate behavior and cyber bullying. Children under 13 are still young, their brain hasn't developed enough for these reasons parents should not allow kids to have social media at such a young age.
