"When I Grow Up" Show and Tell:
Students bring an item that represents a job they want when they grow up and discuss how college might help them get there.
College Storytime
Read a children's book related to college (like"Clothesline Clues for Jobs People Do").
Art Activity - Make a graduation cap!
You will need:
• 2 pieces of card/ thick paper per child (any color)
• 5-inch piece of string/wool or ribbon for the tassel
• Safety scissors
• Tape
Instructions: Cut the first sheet of cards lengthwise in half. Tape the ends together to fit around your head (this is the band that sits on your head). Trim down the second sheet of paper to make a perfect square (this is the top). Poke a hole in the center of the square piece of paper. Thread the yarn through the hole and tape the end to the other side. Use tape to connect the paper band to the square. You can tape on both the inside and outside of the band. Voila! You have yourself a graduation hat!

Students will analyze and compare census data on the earnings of people with different college majors. Then they will write their own word problems and draw conclusions about the data. (Approximate time required: 40 minutes)

Encourages youth to think about a variety of jobs that may or may not be available in their communities. Helps youth evaluate jobs by distinguishing between jobs for now and career-type jobs. (Approximate time required: 10-15 minutes, with discussion 30-45 minutes)

All About Me Activity
Before students can begin making college and career plans, it is important to help them start the process of analyzing who they are. This activity is a fun way for students to think about who they are and put the information into a format that they can share with others.
Bio Poem
Helping students constantly stay in touch with who they are and what makes them unique is one of the most valuable connections that an educator can facilitate. This activity helps students reflect on their unique qualities and then document them in a format that they can keep and see often, to remind themselves of who they truly are.
"I Am" Poem
As students construct their identity, it is important to help them reflect on their unique traits, talents, and assets. The "I Am" Poem and Personality Crest activities help students visually document and reflect on who they are, both from their perspective and through the eyes of others.
Occupational Outlook Scavenger Hunt
In Naviance, under Careers, find jobs that sound interesting to you! Write its name and median salary, and read about each occupation's top knowledge and skills.
8th Grade - Fitting a Line to Data - Earnings and Educational Attainment (US Census Bureau)
Students will investigate the relationship between earnings and different levels of educational attainment by creating a scatter plot, adding an approximate line of best fit to the plot, and judging the line’s accuracy. (Approximate time required: 45 minutes)
College Major Exploration
Have students research different college majors and present what they learned about possible careers in those fields.
College Admissions Simulation
Run a mock admissions process where students review sample applications to understand what colleges look for in applications.
Resume Building Workshop

Create a Dream Wall
Create a College & Career Ready Dream Wall. Cover the wall of a school hallway or classroom with butcher paper; place a large College & Career Ready logo in the center with “Our College & Career Dreams” written underneath. Have students write their academic, professional, and personal goals on the wall or on a cut-out to stick to the wall.
Additional Information: Set up a “College Dreams” photo booth. Have dry-erase boards available so that students can write their College Dreams on them and hold them during the photo.

With a Student Success Card, a student can:

How a student can log in and use their Student Success Card
Click on any online library tool or resource. In the library card number or barcode field, enter the letter code for the school district, followed by the student ID number. For example, if a student’s San Juan Unified student ID number is 123456, they would log in using SJ123456.
A student’s four-digit PIN is the birth year on their school record. Students may visit or call the library at (916) 264-2920 to reset this PIN.
