Welcome to English I!

Class Description:

All English I students will study a core curriculum which continues and expands in the second and third years. This core curriculum is based on the State of Illinois Learning Standards and Common Core Learning Standards. Readings in literature will be supplemented with vocabulary lessons, grammar lessons, writing assignments, speaking assignments and library assignments. Major readings will include: Shakespeare, a contemporary novel, short stories, nonfiction, and poetry.

Fall 2019 Semester:
- Mini-Unit 1: Introduction to Class/Short Narrative Writing
- Mini-Unit 2: Grammar - Parts of Speech, Punctuation, & Sentence/Paragraph Writing
- Unit 3: Literature - Short Stories
- Unit 4: Writing/Poetry - Paragraph Structure & Creative Writing/Poetry Activities
- Unit 5: Introduction to the basics of MLA Format
- Semester-Long Activity: NonFiction Book to read outside of class time
Spring 2020 Semester:
- Unit 1: Literature - War in Literature
- Unit 2: Formal Writing (based on Red Badge, MLA, research)
- Unit 3: Shakespeare
- Supplementary Unit 4: Historical Literature
