TECH TIMES

This month we focus on safety while building our school community from the ground up

Welcome Home to 4 James Ave. Sanford, ME

Building Trades 2 students along with their instructor, Troy Hathaway proudly pose in front of the completed spec house build project. This is the 4th spec house that SRTC has completed to be sold within our community. Students in our Building Trades, Plumbing, Electrical Wiring, and Landscaping & Horticulture programs have worked together this year and last to complete the build from start to finish - site work to light fixtures.  House #5 is already well under way!

SRTC Hosts Field Day 2023!

We were happy to welcome back a missed tradition of hosting field day with our morning and afternoon students.  This event was an opportunity for our students from all 8 partner schools to enjoy the fresh air and have some fun. There were many races on the obstacle course, creative tie-dyes, and enough karaoke to last us the year! Juniors in the welding program proudly defeated the faculty in a battle of tug-of-war and everybody enjoyed warm apple cider donuts fried up by chef John Couture and Troy Hathaway.

Where else would you hear the words "Is it cute.. Is it slay.. Is it OSHA compliant?"

Culinary Arts

Students focus on units of measurement. They ended the session by baking biscuits which were shared among staff. Thankfully - they all came out wonderfully! Landscaping & Horticulture has been hard at work on the gardens outside the of the SRTC Café which will soon be operated by our Culinary Arts program.

Emergency Medical Technician & Cosmetology Programs partnered together for lessons on basic first aid in relation to medical events that might occur in a salon.

Health Occupations & Emergency Medical Technician programs partnered together to learn patient transfer techniques

Collaboration between programs is beneficial for staff and students alike. There are many opportunities for collaboration at SRTC to help strengthen our school community from the inside out.

Building Trades 1 students worked to build and install walls for Video Productions in studio sets. Also pictured is Building Trades 2 posing for a photo op (who doesn't love a giant check) with Deering Lumber. Their 8th annual golf outing at the Sanford Country Club raised $12,000, which was donated to the SRTC Building Trades program to supplement instruction. We thank them for their generous donation!

A representative from WYOTECH presented to the Automotive Collision & Repair and Automotive Technology programs to showcase the options for automotive collision, automotive technology, and diesel mechanic courses offered at their school post grad. Students heard about cost, length of time and options for their future. They were very engaged and enjoyed the presentation. Later in the month both auto programs joined Welding & Metal Fabrication for a presentation from Maine Oxy teaching gas safety. We are very appreciative to our partners out there who are willing to come in and train our students on things that are relevant to their futures.

It's Kids Helping Kids!

Our Digital Design students screen printed 140 t-shirts for the Grahamtastic Connection 5K Run/Walk. The Grahamtastic Foundation provides free technology for children battling cancer and other serious illnesses to support their education, as well as their social and emotional well-being. The technology enables children to continue their education during treatment while also remaining connected to family, friend, and medical providers. The Digital Design Program has proudly supported Grahamtastic and their annual 5k for many years.

All hands on deck! The students of Information Technology & Networking 1 learn how to disassemble and upgrade desktop PC's. We'll soon be seeing them working throughout Sanford High School & Regional Technical Center as they collaborate with the districts IT department to perform hardware installations.

Round of applause for SRTC Firefighting program who participated in the 2nd annual Junior Firefighter Muster at Scarborough Fire Dept. SRTC  students placed first in the hose connecting and the mystery competition! Check out the news coverage from WCSH6 on the event. Way to go Cpt. Smith and crew!  Hot or cold, rain or shine,  our hardy group of Firefighting students can be seen around campus putting on a show!

Mind on the Money and Money on the Mind in the Academy of Business!

Students were happy to welcome Yanely Espinal, author of Mind Your Money and Director of Educational Outreach at Next Gen Personal Finance whom they have formed a close partnership with over the past year. Yanley joins the Academy of Business class via zoom several times each month and gifted each student a copy of her book! Learn more about this program here

SkillsUSA kicks off with nominations off this years officers. Please join us in congratulating these students! The excitement is building around SRTC to see how far we can go in the SkillsUSA  competitions this year!
