Plagiarism

What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the act of using someone else’s work, without referencing it.

  • It is illegal (a breach of copyright).
  • It is taken very seriously by Schools, Universities, Publishers, and other authorities.
  • It can get you kicked out of a College or University, or even sued!

What does Plagiarism look like?

Plagiarism comes in many forms.

Here are some examples:

  • Forgetting to add quotation marks (" ") when you add a quote.
  • Presenting someone else’s idea or argument, without referencing them (even by accident). Make sure you always include an in-text citation AND a reference list item for the ideas/facts you present.
  • Using your own work from another assignment, without referencing yourself and the old assignment.
  • Using an image, graph, or some other representation without providing a reference (including in-text).
  • Using an expressed idea from an article, and passing it off as your own by simply rearranging the words a bit. (This one is a common mistake!)
