The rise of Irish Australia

Ireland's 1916 Easter Rising helped to shape political forces in Australia at a crucial time in our own national history. In particular, the execution of the leaders of the insurrection had a profound effect on Archbishop Daniel Mannix, the man who led Australia's Catholic community. Independent documentary maker Eoin Hahessy captures the mood of the time in this new film commemorating the centenary of these powerful events.

'It was only late in the 19th century that the large group called ‘Irish Australian Catholics’ consolidated itself, when people began to settle in the big cities, when there was a larger marrying pool within one’s own group, when an increase in religious bigotry made Catholics huddle together to deflect the flames of sectarian scorn, and when the Catholic Church began to enforce its dislike of mixed marriages.'

The Melbourne Irish

“With nearly 7 million Australians from Irish heritage our histories are intertwined. We will exhibit unique collections that reveal how keenly the Irish Easter Rising was felt in Australia and the effect those events abroad had on our own history,” says Kate Torney, former CEO State Library Victoria.

The Irish rising 'a terrible beauty is born.'

These days, when Australians of Irish Catholic descent have occupied the highest positions in the land, it may seem hollow to talk of them as marginalised.

But right up to the 1970s the Catholic-Protestant divide was deeply entrenched – with painful and often lasting social consequences for those who dared to marry across it.

Marrying across Australia's Catholic - Protestant divide

The complicated history of Northern Ireland is hotly contested. The bloody 30-year conflict known as the Troubles caused thousands of deaths, with deep divisions across Northern Ireland, and the situation remains highly divisive to this day. This four-part series will examine the entire history of the Troubles, from the causes of the conflict to the long and difficult peace negotiations. In this first episode, we take an in depth look at the origin of the Troubles. Though the conflict began in earnest in 1969, the divisons that caused it can be traced back centuries.
