Conflict & Change
Facilitator: Valerie Crawford, MAEd
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, recognizes that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
Students will be using the Global Sustainable Development Goals to create a service project or become an activist, choosing one way that they can make a difference to bring equity and sustainability of the community of San Diego.
In this course, we will look at conflicts that exist due to inequities, and then conflicts that make it difficult for equity to exist. You will take this further by asking “How can I help others heal from conflict?” As a class, you will choose a service project to complete in order to help people in San Diego heal from whatever inequity they face.
Step 1: Choose a Global Goal that caters to a specific demographic in your community (homeless, refugees, immigrants, etc.)
Step 2: Choose a specific demographic to try and help.
Step 3: Plan how you will help the demographic you have chosen.
Step 4: Execute your service project and provide your chosen demographic with the resources they need to begin healing from conflict.
Students: You will choose the service project as a class, so brainstorming sessions for Steps 1 and 2 are necessary so that each class chooses the right service project. Ideas for service projects include: food drive, blanket drive, serving lunch in a soup kitchen, toy drive, care packages, and activism in action (awareness pamphlets, website, event, etc.).
Whatever service project you and your classmates choose, make sure you all choose something you’re passionate about as that will make this learning experience even more meaningful. Remember, the goal is to help someone heal from the situation they are in.
Project Timeline (Grouped by Grading Periods):
P1: Learn about sustainable development. Create an infographic, editorial*, poster, or video to raise awareness of the issue in your local community.
P2: Create a 3-5 minute podcast that tells a family or community member’s story and explores the theme that inequality creates conflict.
S1: Students will engage in a Shark Tank inspired concept pitch and panel review to refine their ideas about their Global Goal Project plan.
P3:Students will research how one of the sustainable development goals is being addressed in San Diego and display their research on a collaborative poster. Students will use this poster as part of a pitch for their service project.
P4:Students put their service project into action before the PHHS Spring Showcase.
S2: Students reflect on how one person can make a difference. Selected students can participate in the CCTE Showcase.
