SHOUT OUTS & SCHOOL INFO

CONFIRM YOUR ENROLLMENT FOR THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR

Dear San Diego Unified Families,

Starting on August 30, 2021, we are proud to continue in-person learning for all students, including five full days per week of on-campus instruction that follows established bell schedules, transportation routes, in-person meals, and extended-day programs. All SDUSD schools will continue to monitor and follow health and safety guidelines. While in-person, full-time instruction is the primary and recommended mode of learning for all students next year, the district is offering a virtual academy for K-12 students who choose to remain online.

Our San Diego Unified Virtual Academy will offer a robust online magnet school available for students K-12. This Virtual Academy will provide rigorous daily instruction substantially equivalent to onsite instruction, which includes grade-level standards-based lessons and District and State assessments. Teacher directed instruction, at our District Virtual Academy, will require students to be highly engaged and responsible for completing all class assignments. The only option for comprehensive online instruction will be offered centrally through the Virtual Academy rather than at neighborhood schools. Students may have on-campus opportunities to receive academic support, labs or hands-on activities. High school students will have opportunities to participate in athletics.

The Virtual Academy will provide instruction for all participating students, including students receiving special education services and multilingual learners. The Virtual Academy will provide virtual IEP services, as outlined in student’s IEPs.

The Virtual Academy will not offer the following programs: Early Learning, including Transitional Kindergarten (TK), Dual Language, International Baccalaureate (IB), and/or STEAM/VAPA Magnet.

Please take a few minutes to complete the enrollment form below with your information and make a selection for Fall 2021-2022.

To help students prepare for the upcoming school year, San Diego Unified has organized Level Up SD, a summer of learning and joy, which gives every student access to added educational and enrichment opportunities starting next month. Only students enrolled in San Diego Unified schools for the fall are eligible to take part in this exciting free program. For more information, click here. So, complete your fall enrollment today!

We look forward to continuing to serve and support your child during our upcoming school year!

CHS STUDENTS TAKE FIRST AT THE CCTE SHOWCASE

CHS is so excited and pleased to announce that a rock star team of engineering students have WON the CCTE Innovation Showcase Open Category for their Honor's Crane Project. Congratulations to Melia Miner, Grace Crabtree, Lily Huynh and Kacie Harris! You can check out the project (and the competition) on the Innovation Showcase website.

The four students that took this on were part of a 6 person team that won last year for their Freshman Intro to Design Activity Center Project. ...AND the year before for their 8th Grade Industrial Engineering/Pollution project. DISTRICT PROVIDED LAPTOPS

Returning CHS students who checked out a District provided Chromebook will be allowed to take their devices home over summer. CHS encourages all students who will be taking their laptop home with them to review the following resources.:

June Returns for Chromebooks

CHS will not be processing any Chromebook exchanges – if a student has a broken Chromebook on June 14, 15th, they can return it and get a new one in the Fall.

Seniors – ALL Seniors turn in their Chromebooks (if they work or not).

  • I will separate “Senior” returned Chromebooks and “other” returned Chromebooks (I want to troubleshoot and keep the “other” Chromebooks.) Check In all Chromebooks.

August/Fall school start

  • All incoming Freshman will turn in their middle school Chromebooks to the CHS library (during registration) and receive a new CHS Chromebook. During the summer, we should be getting another shipment of Chromebooks to cover Freshman enrollment.

YOUR OPINION MATTERS - STUDENT & PARENT SURVEY

As part of SDUSD Local Control Accountability Plan and mandates as described in the California School Dashboard, our District is required to measure Student Engagement, Parent Engagement & Overall School Climate. The California School Survey System (CAL-SCHLS) includes 3 surveys: California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), California School Staff Survey (CSSS) and California Parent Survey (CPSS). All surveys are anonymous.

This year, the following are recommended participation goals for 2020-2021:

  • California Healthy Kids Survey: 80-85%

  • California Staff Survey: 60%

  • California Parent Survey: 40%

The CAL-SCHLS survey system is the most commonly used and reliable school survey, covering topics related to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, bullying, and other health issues such as school climate and student resiliency. The survey will be administered from May 1-28, 2021. These surveys will support and guide efforts for Multi-Tier Systems of Supports, Integrated Youth Services and our baseline data for High Reliability Schools (Level 1). Enhancing Positive School Climate and creating systems of prevention will continue to guide our District’s CAL-SCHLS data collection, data dissemination and integration.

CHS is asking that all parents and students take a moment to complete the appropriate survey at the link below.

Student Survey: https://wested.ugam-apps.com/wed/ts/SeaB

Parent Survey: https://wested.ugam-apps.com/wed/ts/cm1n

We value your feedback and are always looking for ways to improve the experience our students and families have here at CHS.

SAVE THE DATE

LEVEL UP SAN DIEGO, A SUMMER OF LEARNING & JOY

Created this year by the San Diego Unified School District and The San Diego Foundation, Level Up SD, a Summer of Learning and Joy features in-person classroom instruction in the mornings at neighborhood schools with San Diego Unified teachers and summer activities offered by dozens of nonprofits in communities across the city. There is no cost to families for the classroom instruction or the activities, thanks to a $31 million commitment by the San Diego Unified Board of Education. To be eligible for #LevelUpSD, students must be enrolled in San Diego Unified for the 2021-2022 school year.

Summer school generally is offered to a select group of struggling students. Level Up SD is open to all K-12 students. This means thousands of kids from every corner of our community can now take advantage of in-person teacher-led instruction and summer activities beyond the classroom, like learning to kayak or learning to fly a drone, for the first time.

Enrichment Opportunities:

While the most rewarding learning experiences will come from our amazing educators, we are also partnering with the San Diego Foundation and dozens of local nonprofits to provide students with afternoon enrichment opportunities at no cost to families throughout the city. Summer enrichment programming offered by our VAPA, CCTE, and community partners will be available throughout June, July, and August 2021. Enrichment opportunities will include sports camps, STEAM-based experiences, access to UCSD Extension courses, and UC Scout online AP courses. These offerings will be available for enrollment on the Level Up SD website beginning May 26:

https://levelupsandiego.org/en/search

Examples of some classes are: Intro to Math 10A (Calculus), Intro to Psych, Intro to AutoCAD, Intro to Swift Programming, Intro to Logic, Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Organizational Behavior.. and lots more that either JA, teachers from our district, or other partners are teaching in person.

CHS FOUNDATION TAKE-OUT THURSDAYS FUNDRAISER

Wait, so I can raise money for CHS, support local restaurants, AND enjoy delicious food!?!?!?!

The CHS Foundation is hosting Take-Out Thursdays, a series of fundraisers going on every Thursday through the rest of the year. They even have one over Spring Break. Check out the list of dates and locations below and help support our Chieftains in a delicious and easy way.

CHS Player's Creed

It is the mission of the CHS athletics program to teach our student-athletes principles that will guide them for the rest of their lives. CHS athletics isn't just about better athletes, but better people. That is why we are so excited to launch our new CHS Player's Creed (see below). In collaboration with the CHS Athletic Leadership council and various stakeholders, the CHS Player’s Creed was developed to outline what we believe it means to be a CHIEF. Every student participating in athletics at CHS, as well as their parent/guardian will be required to sign the CHS Student-Athlete Contract which states the following:

As a student-athlete at Clairemont High School you have the privilege of being part of a memorable and life changing experience. With this privilege comes great responsibility. Therefore, it is the expectation of the CHS admin team and Athletic Director that all who participate in athletics actively work to model character and integrity of the highest quality in the classroom, on the court/pool/field, and in our community. By signing this contract, you agree to strive to live a life worthy of emulating by exhibiting Courage, Humility, Integrity, Endurance, and Focus in all that you do.
