It is our absolute pleasure to announce that at last week's SDUSD Board of Education Meeting, Superintendent Marten officially appointed our Community Interview Panel’s first choice applicant, Mr. Reuben Hoffman to be the next Vice Principal of Clairemont High School. Reuben has served as SDUSD’s Project-Based Learning (PBL) Resource Teacher and has supported CHS and many of our Academy teams at the summer PBL Institute. He is a product of the San Diego Unified educational system and lives right here in Clairemont. Reuben comes to us with over 20 years of classroom experience as a Social Science teacher and was selected as the Grossmont Unified Teacher of the Year in 2010. He is a Google for Education Certified Trainer and Innovator and brings a wealth of experience in integrating technology into the classroom.
We would like to thank the CHS Community Interview Panel for their work in helping select the newest member of our CHS Admin team. We couldn’t be more excited to add Reuben to our CHS family. His passion for the work happening at Clairemont was evident in his interview and it was clear that he shares our excitement for our long-term vision. In short, Reuben is not just a qualified candidate, but the perfect fit for Clairemont High! Reuben's first official day at CHS will be Monday, May 17.
Each year, at about this time, Clairemont High School Juniors and Seniors participate in state-wide standardized testing known as the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The primary purpose of the CAASPP System is to assist teachers, administrators, students, and parents by promoting high-quality teaching and learning through the use of a variety of assessment approaches and item types.
In light of the COVID 19 pandemic, the California Teachers Association and the National Education Association together with many large urban districts in California urged the California Department of Education to submit a waiver for standardized testing for the 2020-21 school year to the US Department of Education. While the waiver did not remove the requirement to administer assessments, it did result in some flexibility to use local assessments as long as they meet certain state requirements. As a result, San Diego Unified will be administering the following three assessments instead of the traditional CAASPP assessments.
FAST (Fast Track Reading) Assessment
Assessing skills in English Language Arts
Grades 9-11
45 minutes
Administered on May 11 during Period 1
DEMI (District Essential Math Indicators) Assessment
Assessing skills in Mathematics
Grades 9-11
30-40 minutes
Administered on May 12 during Period 2
CORE Social & Emotional Survey
Assessing intrapersonal and extrapersonal competencies (i.e., self-efficacy, self-management, social awareness and growth, mindset)
Grades 9-12
25 minutes
Administered between May 24 and June 15
San Diego Unified will be providing opportunities for 11th grade students to take the more traditional ELA and Mathematics standardized assessments through the CAASPP system in order to take advantage of the Early Assessment Program (EAP) for Math and English placement in the CSU system. Students and families with questions about the Early Assessment Program should reach out to their counselor. This assessment opportunity is not in lieu of the local reading, math and SEL assessments. It will be given on an opt-in basis for students, who in consultation with their parents and school counselors, elect to participate. More information on how to opt-in to this assessment will be provided at a later date.
As part of SDUSD Local Control Accountability Plan and mandates as described in the California School Dashboard, our District is required to measure Student Engagement, Parent Engagement & Overall School Climate. The California School Survey System (CAL-SCHLS) includes 3 surveys: California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), California School Staff Survey (CSSS) and California Parent Survey (CPSS). All surveys are anonymous.
This year, the following are recommended participation goals for 2020-2021:
California Healthy Kids Survey: 80-85%
California Staff Survey: 60%
California Parent Survey: 40%
The CAL-SCHLS survey system is the most commonly used and reliable school survey, covering topics related to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, bullying, and other health issues such as school climate and student resiliency. The survey will be administered from May 1-28, 2021. These surveys will support and guide efforts for Multi-Tier Systems of Supports, Integrated Youth Services and our baseline data for High Reliability Schools (Level 1). Enhancing Positive School Climate and creating systems of prevention will continue to guide our District’s CAL-SCHLS data collection, data dissemination and integration.
CHS is asking that all parents and students take a moment to complete the appropriate survey at the link below.
Student Survey: https://wested.ugam-apps.com/wed/ts/SeaB
Parent Survey: https://wested.ugam-apps.com/wed/ts/cm1n
We value your feedback and are always looking for ways to improve the experience our students and families have here at CHS.

In partnership with Sharp Memorial Hospital, SDUSD has identified Clairemont High School to serve as one of a handful of COVID-19 vaccine clinics. Sharp Memorial has secured Pfizer vaccines for students, families, staff, and community members and will be administering them to those interested next Wednesday, May 12 between the hours of 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. Please note that this opportunity is optional and is not required for students who wish to be on campus. Here are some important information points:
Students eligible for the vaccine are anyone age 16 and over. The Pfizer vaccine is the only brand approved for ages 16-18.
Anyone over the age of 18 can schedule an appointment or walk in.
This clinic is open to community, staff, families, and students.
Sharp will plan to be on site on May 12 and then return for the 2nd dose of vaccine on Thursday, June 3.
New recommendations are that anyone 14 days past a COVID positive infection can receive a vaccine, as long as their symptoms have resolved.
Signed paper consent forms with parent signatures are required for minors. There will also be an electronic version sent home to families, as well. Parents or guardians can either consent electronically or with a paper consent. Parents may access the consent form by clicking HERE.
Please use the link below to sign up for your vaccine appointment. https://www.caprepmod.org/reg/9012771169
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to either Principal Williams (ewilliams4@sandi.net) or Nurse Sascha (alopez-nusser@sandi.net).
Clairemont High has been working with UCSD to provide COVID PCR testing and screenings for staff and athletes and optional for students coming on campus (not for sick staff or students with symptoms). We have been testing on Fridays, but will be transitioning to Thursday afternoons after Spring Break.
Please use these links to begin using this service if you are a student or staff going on campus and would like to be tested. Currently it is not for siblings or family members. It is a fantastic opportunity to care for one another when we know that many people can carry COVID without any symptoms.

The Varsity Clairemont Girl’s Water Polo team ended a 4 game losing streak to the Del Norte Nighthawks dating back to 2016 with a solid 9-5 performance on Wednesday evening. A strong first quarter of shooting from Senior Captain Fiona Flanagan put the Chieftains up 3-0 early on, but a fierce come back from the Nighthawks pulled them within 1 near the end of the quarter. Sophomore Calli Browne capped off the strong start to the first quarter however with a beautiful move from center and scored to give Clairemont the 4-2 lead. The Lady Chiefs were able to... With League play coming to an end on March 10th. There was a bit of a waiting game to see who was League Champion. As your Lady Chieftains waited patiently they knew even if the Mission Bay Girls won their race they will be ready to go one more round to claim their title.
Results came out that night though and with Hoover beating Mission Bay there was only one undefeated team left. Your Clairemont Chieftains! For the Senior Gioia Ternasky it was sweet relief for her, as her previous teams came up 2nd the past 3 years. For the Sophomore class it was another honor added to their stellar careers. It is the mission of the CHS athletics program to teach our student-athletes principles that will guide them for the rest of their lives. CHS athletics isn't just about better athletes, but better people. That is why we are so excited to launch our new CHS Player's Creed (see below). In collaboration with the CHS Athletic Leadership council and various stakeholders, the CHS Player’s Creed was developed to outline what we believe it means to be a CHIEF. Every student participating in athletics at CHS, as well as their parent/guardian will be required to sign the CHS Student-Athlete Contract which states the following:
As a student-athlete at Clairemont High School you have the privilege of being part of a memorable and life changing experience. With this privilege comes great responsibility. Therefore, it is the expectation of the CHS admin team and Athletic Director that all who participate in athletics actively work to model character and integrity of the highest quality in the classroom, on the court/pool/field, and in our community. By signing this contract, you agree to strive to live a life worthy of emulating by exhibiting Courage, Humility, Integrity, Endurance, and Focus in all that you do.
