SHOUT OUTS & SCHOOL INFO

SCHOOL REOPENING UPDATE

This past week I received some news regarding the future reopening of our school and all schools within San Diego Unified. District planners have outlined the next phases for that reopening and announced plans to release a timeline for the next phase following the next County Health Department update on Tuesday, October 27.

Behind every student and teacher eager to be back on campus, I know there is a family concerned about the health and safety of their loved ones. For that reason, I want to be clear that all of these plans were created in collaboration with some of the best scientific experts in our community. This process will not be rushed, and students will not be forced to return before they feel comfortable doing so. We will also continue working with our bargaining units to protect the safety of all staff members.

As you know, last week the District launched Phase 1 of it’s plan, which has allowed for the return of small numbers of Elementary students to campus. The upcoming phases are as follows:

Expansion of Phase 1

  • Expansion of Phase 1 appointment-based program for secondary students grades 6-12 and educators.
  • Expansion of Phase 1 appointment-based program for infant/toddler and early learning programs and educators.

Phase 2

  • Elementary (PreK-5th Grade) students would return to campus 4 days a week. Students would be split into two cohorts for either an am session or pm session in order to safely rotate students into classrooms. Elementary students would receive instruction onsite Mondays through Thursdays. Fridays would be set aside for “live” online check-ins and independent asynchronous learning.
  • Secondary (6th-12th grade) students would return to campus 2 days a week. Students would be split into two cohorts with Cohort 1 attending on Mondays and Tuesdays and Cohort 2 attending on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Fridays would be dedicated to online learning for all students. Secondary students would follow a similar bell schedule with morning minutes dedicated to class period instruction and afternoon minutes would be dedicated to Flex Time for asynchronous learning or appointment-based services.

Phase 3

  • Elementary (Prek-5th Grade) students would attend in-person instruction four days a week Monday through Thursday. Fridays would be set aside for “live” online check-ins and independent asynchronous learning.
  • Secondary (6th-12th Grade) students would attend in-classes onsite four days a week, Monday through Thursday. Fridays would be set aside for online learning. Morning minutes would still be dedicated to class period instruction and afternoon minutes would be dedicated to Flex Time.

Phase 4

  • Elementary (Prek-5th Grade) students would attend 5 days a week with 1 modified day.
  • Secondary (6th-12th Grade) students would attend 5 days a week. Morning minutes would still be dedicated to class period instruction and afternoon minutes would be dedicated to Flex Time.

Next Tuesday, following the next update from the County Department of Health, district leaders will announce which date the next phase will begin. Once again, these decisions will be based on science to ensure the safest reopening possible for all involved.

As soon as I have additional information, I will share that with our school community. On behalf of our entire team, I would like to say thank you for the tremendous support we have all received from our families. Together, I know we will come out of this experience a stronger and more resilient school community.

TEXTBOOK PICK UP/RETURN

CHS students are being asked to come to the Clairemont campus next week to RETURN their Quarter 1 textbooks and pick up materials and textbooks for Quarter 2. In order to limit the number of students/families accessing the library at any given time, we are asking that students and families adhere to the following pickup schedule:

  • Seniors - Tuesday, October 27 - 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
  • Juniors - Wednesday, October 28 - 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
  • Sophomores -Thursday, October 29 - 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
  • Freshmen - Friday, October 30 - 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm

DIRECTIONS FOR STUDENTS RETURNING/PICKING UP TEXTBOOKS

Remain in your vehicle at all times and follow directions for the designated path seen in the picture below. A staff member will come to your vehicle to retrieve your returned textbooks and novels and school ID. SDUSD students may bring the student ID they used during their 8th grade year. Students without an ID may still pick up textbooks so long as they are enrolled at Clairemont High School and provide us with their school ID# and last name. Your ID will be returned to you before you leave. CHS staff members will retrieve your Quarter 2 textbooks and bring them to your car.

The Textbook line will be routed back along Ute through the main office parking lot in order to stay off of Clairemont Drive. Once students/families have obtained their textbooks, they will exit back out onto the service road and onto Modoc St.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Families who have yet to turn in either their Universal Form or LCFF Form will be provided with one to complete and turn into CHS staff on their scheduled return/pick up day. Families will also receive information regarding their Parent Portal account as well as how to submit pictures for the school yearbook.

END OF QUARTER 1

The Quarter 1 Grading Period ends on Friday, October 30. Q1 grades will be available in PowerSchool and through your Parent Portal account on Friday, November 6. Students will begin their Quarter 2 classes on Monday, November 2. Quarter 2 courses are currently visible in Power School. If your child would like to speak about their schedule, please have them request an appointment with their counselor using the link below.

ATTENDANCE PHONE CALLS

The automated attendance calls via SchoolMessenger have been re-enabled effective Monday, October 19th. Families will begin receiving calls if their student is marked absent on any given school day or period in PowerSchool. Parent's are encouraged to monitor their child's attendance in Power School using their Parent Portal account. Please contact CHS School Clerk, Mrs. Lissi Perretta with any attendance related questions or to clear your child's absences.

AP TESTING

The window is now open for students to sign up to take the AP exam. Students will need to follow all steps listed on the following website https://aptsusa.com/clairemont/ . Students may signup now until 10/30/20. Exam fees are $95.00. After 10/30/20 there will be a $40.00 late fee. Students who qualify for a free and reduced code will need to speak with their counselor. A free and reduced exam is $5. This year’s exam, no matter the environment (distance vs. In person learning), will be a normal exam (last year it was only multiple choice).

If you have any additional questions about AP Testing, please reach out to Vice Principal Sarah Thomas (srodondithomas@sandi.net).

CHS ATHLETICS & HOME PERIODS

The Fall Athletics Season is set to begin on December 12. As a result, a student's athletic eligibility for the Fall Season will be based on their Quarter 2 grades which will be reported on Friday, December 11. Students who wish to participate in athletics must be enrolled in at least two Clairemont classes during Quarter 2. Mesa classes and UCSD classes will not count toward athletic eligibility. Therefore, all students who currently have a home period in their Quarter 2 schedule and would like to participate in athletics, must request a meeting with their counselor to adjust their schedule to include two Clairemont classes.

CHS Player's Creed

It is the mission of the CHS athletics program to teach our student-athletes principles that will guide them for the rest of their lives. CHS athletics isn't just about better athletes, but better people. That is why we are so excited to launch our new CHS Player's Creed (see below). In collaboration with the CHS Athletic Leadership council and various stakeholders, the CHS Player’s Creed was developed to outline what we believe it means to be a CHIEF. Every student participating in athletics at CHS, as well as their parent/guardian will be required to sign the CHS Student-Athlete Contract which states the following:

As a student-athlete at Clairemont High School you have the privilege of being part of a memorable and life changing experience. With this privilege comes great responsibility. Therefore, it is the expectation of the CHS admin team and Athletic Director that all who participate in athletics actively work to model character and integrity of the highest quality in the classroom, on the court/pool/field, and in our community. By signing this contract, you agree to strive to live a life worthy of emulating by exhibiting Courage, Humility, Integrity, Endurance, and Focus in all that you do.
