San Diego Unified School District’s physical education program, Increasing Movement and Physical Activity in Class Time, or IMPACT, helps keep students moving throughout the school day. It is a 20 minute, station-based program that incorporates the five components of physical fitness, by increasing daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in students. Activities can be taught by the physical education teacher but are also easily implemented by classroom teachers.
Equipment and curriculum are provided to create a sustainable program to improve student health and fitness. IMPACT helps to fill the gap at schools that offer limited or no physical education classes and to enhance physical education curriculum when taught by a credentialed physical education teacher.

Why IMPACT?
BAttling Obesity
Fewer than 25% of children get the recommended 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily, and 25% of American youth ages 10 to 17 are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Improved Fitness
Regular physical activity can help improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and decrease the risk of developing serious health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Increased Cognition
Physical activity also enhances cognitive skills such as concentration and attention, as well as classroom attitudes and behaviors, all of which are important factors of improved academic performance, according to the CDC.
