Art 1-2
This foundational high school course introduces students with diverse abilities and artistic experience to build the fundamental skills necessary for further exploration in specialized art disciplines in 2D or 3D Art. Through a hands-on exploration of various artistic mediums, students will engage in the creative process, from various drawing techniques, painting exploration, sculpting, and other artistic forms. They will study influential artists, movements, and cultural contexts that have shaped the artistic landscape. Students will develop a depth of understanding for the elements of art and principles of design to foster creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong appreciation for artistic expression. They will engage in constructive discussions and critiques of artworks, honing the ability to articulate and receive feedback in a supportive environment.
Art 3-4
This in-depth course focuses on the fundamental principles and applications of color in art. Students will develop comprehensive knowledge of how colors interact, evoke emotions, and impact various art forms. By exploring color theory through hands-on projects, color mixing and analysis, students will understand its significance in visual communication. Additionally by examining its historical significance in terms of cultural contexts, students will be able to identify trends to help them develop, refine, and use color intentionally in their own artistic works.
Graphic Design 1-2
Students learn the basics of graphic design by preparing original art combining typography, page layout, and integrated graphic elements. They receive instruction in the following areas: elements of art and principles of design; mechanical and computer design methods; finishing of graphic products; historical and cultural development of graphics and the printing industry. The course teaches students how to organize ideas, create meaning in their original work, and work ideas into new and useful creations, thereby developing the students’ confidence in their artistic abilities. Honors Graphic Design students will gain a progressive understanding of theory and concepts of visual communication used to present information or promote a message to a consumer-driven market.
Graphic Design 3-4
This course will build upon techniques developed in previous coursework including fundamental principles and elements of visual communication and the historical development of design through exploring graphic art history. Students will explore, in an independent manner, the various facets of visual communication including the principles of design and layout, design theory, advertising principles, technology and practice. They will practice the art of conceptualizing projects, reinventing clichés, distilling complex information, and motivating an audience. Students will be able to apply skills learned in previous classes such as typography, image development, layout, image and photographic manipulation, and creation of digital artwork. Students will prepare individual portfolios suitable for presentation for transfer to another college, art school, client or job interview. Students’ skills will be enhanced through experiences that simulate the graphic design industry using school-based and work-based learning opportunities. This is the final course in the CTE Graphic Design pathway.
Digital Communication 1-2
