IM 2- Entering Week 6
September 15, 2025
September 15, 2025
A grading period is typically 6 weeks and this one will end on Friday, September 19. I intend to cut grades off on September 18 since we have a quiz that day.
Please know that this is only a benchmark - this is where the students are at the moment. The end of the semester is in December and that grade is what goes on transcripts. A semester is about 18 or 19 weeks, so students still have a lot of time to influence their grades.
A reminder that quizzes and tests are recorded as soon as possible so you will be able to see in Powerschools how they faired. The result of last Friday's quiz is now in Powerschools.
And ... I'm behind on scoring practice work. Apologies on that 😬. I expect to record Week 4 Work by the end of Monday. As for Week 5 Work, this will be due on Monday. I will assess them hopefully by end of Wednesday and have them entered in grading.
This class takes place immediately after lunch and athletes in the class have missed one day a week of instruction every week to attend a sporting event.
The missed days equate to missing 20% of instruction time every week. Thus far, we have had Friday reviews and quizzes, and those students have had to make up the quizzes the following Monday while everyone else is practicing new content - putting them at a disadvantage. For that reason, athletes who know they will miss class on the day of an assessment will need to take any quiz or test the day before during class, or the day of during lunch.
The past week, we started factoring greatest common factor - the opposite of distributive property. This week, we begin factoring trinomials - the opposite of multiplying binomials (the students know this as FOIL). This is an important procedural concept in higher mathematics and we will spend most of the week on this.
On Thursday or Friday, we will quiz on this topic. Then students will start reviewing for the Unit 2 test.
A reminder that quizzes are worth 30 to 40 points. Tests are worth 100 points.
On Monday, the class watched the Patriot Broadcast. Students who take Arts and Media produce the videos.
Elektra expresses confusion on using factoring and the Zero-Product Rule to solve an equation. She explains her thinking and where she got hung up.
Emily and Mariam are gaining momentum on factoring out the GCF.
