Cardinals Advocate Through Technology

Project Overview
Tech is the trending form of advocacy. It has never been more apparent than when we sheltered in place and shared. Devastating images and videos in the media mobilized people from all age groups to advocate, but with some being unable to take to the streets, many have begun using their social media and online presence to enact change. We have seen the effectiveness of digital coordination efforts for protests and for giving equitable, streamlined access to resources and information. With this framework in mind, students will develop tools and strategies for advocating, educating, and inciting change in their community. Students will connect with a variety of different advocacy groups in City Heights and analyze the tools that they use to communicate their message to the community. They will perform target audience research and identify appropriate tools (advocacy) for reaching that audience, as well as identify the strengths and weaknesses of each tool. They will create an infographic, vlog, and then create a City Heights Resource Web-based app to explain and demonstrate how the tools are used and present them to their community partners. The ultimate goal will be to create a user friendly, hub of information that will positively help the community thrive and advocate for change.
This project will get off the ground with a Field Trip and Exploration of City Heights Dojo Cafe and Community Event Space. Students will organize and create ads for a food distribution event at the Dojo Event Space. On day of distribution, the creator/founder of the Dojo Cafe, Tayari Shorter, will present and discuss his “why” for advocacy. Students will do a pre-vlog via flipgrid about what advocacy means to them. After the distribution and presentation, they will do a post-vlog about what they learned about Dojo’s particular form of advocacy and how what they learned could be applied to other organizations. The launch event will wrap up with the students creating a food access map of City Heights and discuss the need for food equity.
In this project you will get to advocate for something you are passionate about, find other people in City-Heights that share your passion, and work with a team to create a website, mobile app, and more to help spread the word and inform others about your important cause!
To make the biggest impact it helps to know where the people and resources you want to reach/share are. Work with your team to map the community, target your efforts where they are needed the most, and guide people to the best parts of City-Heights
Record your experience and help others understand why you are passionate about your topic through the practice of Vlogging.
What moments will you share with your audience to get them to see things the way you do and join your cause?
Writing and reading can be powerful tools for advocating for change and informing others about a cause. Get an introduction to ethical hacking and how tech plays a role in socio-economic factors through the novel Ready Player One. Students will research and analyze primary source Civil Rights documents, read excerpts of How I Resist: Activism and Hope for a New Generation "Media Consciousness as Part of Resistance!" These texts, coupled with rhetorical analysis and writing situation practice will enable our students to create meaningful infographics and vlogs to enact real change.
Together with your team create a Resource Hub for your City Heights industry partner so that they may grow their digital presence and promote their resources. Accessibility to information is key to growth, change, and advocacy. Help create infographics for the community resource of your choice, distribute them electronically and in printed media, and encourage members of the City Heights community to engage in these online platforms and familiarize themselves with the plethora of resources that City Heights has to offer. Finish off the project by create a placard with QR code links to additional information for each location, maps to other locations, and the complete Resource Hub. During the entire process, create vlogs in your Video Production course to document your process, analyze the effectiveness, and discuss how this is helping the community.
