The Runaway Rice Cake Written by Ying Chang Compestine; illustrated by Tungwai Chau
THINK/DISCUSS:

· RECIPE: STEAMED NIAN~GAO
Always cook with and adult
1 ½ cup glutinous rice flour
1 cup rice flour
1 cup sugar (brown or white)
¼ cup dried cherries (or) cherry flavored cranberries
1 cup chopped almonds
1 cup water
Combine everything except water. Add water.
Spray a pie tin with non-stick spray. Pour batter in pan.
Put the pan in a steamer or big soup pot (2 separate compartments).
Pour water in bottom compartment.
Steam for 20 minutes until the nian gao is translucent or solid.
Make sure the rice cake doesn’t run away while it’s cooking!

Martin Luther King, Jr., led the civil rights movement in the United States. He used nonviolent, or peaceful, protest to gain equal rights for African Americans.
May 2-9, 1963 The Birmingham Children's Crusade March.
August 28, 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
In 1964 Martin Luther King, Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his dynamic leadership of the Civil Rights movement and steadfast commitment to achieving racial justice through nonviolent action.
Just after 6 p.m. on April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated (fatally shot) while standing on the balcony outside his second-story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.
Martin Luther King's birthday was finally approved as a federal holiday in 1983, and all 50 states made it a state government holiday by 2000. Officially, MLK was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta. But the MLK holiday is marked every year on the third Monday in January.

Did you know there are approximately 300 species of octopus? This is a true story about Inky, a Common New Zealand Octopus . A fisherman caught Inky off New Zealand’s shallow reefs and donated him to the National Aquarium in Wellington.
