Ensembles and Courses
The Marching Band is a single semester course that takes place during the first semester. Students enrolled in this course learn how to march and move as a cohesive unit, perform various marches in different styles, perform at football games, and multiple time in the La Jolla community. This group uses traditional wind instruments along with a marching drumline and colorguard. Students will receive 1/2 year of PE credit.
The Wind Ensemble is available exclusively in the second semester of the school year. This ensemble focuses on musical repertoire suitable for high school and early college students. Additionally, there is an optional Honors level course available for fourth-year students in their senior year.
The Orchestra is a year-round ensemble composed of string instruments that performs works by both classical and contemporary living composers. Students in the orchestra will have several performance opportunities throughout the school year. Additionally, there is potential for honors credit during the fourth year, which is available through audition. This ensemble collaborates with wind musicians to perform larger symphonic works.
This ensemble combines the String Orchestra and members of the Wind Ensemble to perform larger works. Students are either enrolled in Wind Ensemble or String Orchestra to have access to this ensemble
This after school ensemble focuses on exploring the various styles and form that often fall under the umbrella of Jazz. This ensemble performs frequently at on and off campus events throughout the school year.
This ensemble performs in partnership with the theater department. After school rehearsals lead up to the multiple runs of the actual musical performance. Instrumentation varies per musical. Into the Woods required a full orchestra.
