In alignment with the San Diego Unified School District's student device policy, Hickman Elementary School will implement a universal "Away for the Day" policy for all cell phones and smartwatches.
To ensure students remain focused on learning, engaged with their peers, and free from distractions, students will not have access to personal electronic devices during the school day.
Cell phones must be powered off before entering campus.
Phones must remain turned off and stored securely in the student's backpack for the entire school day.
Students may not use cell phones during class, recess, lunch, passing periods, or while waiting for dismissal.
Smartwatches capable of texting, calling, internet access, photography, recording, gaming, or other communication features must also remain stored in the student's backpack throughout the school day.
Smartwatches may not be worn or used during school hours, even if they are placed in "School Mode" or have notifications disabled.
If a student needs to contact a parent or guardian during the school day, they may do so through the school office. Likewise, parents needing to reach their child should contact the school office, and staff will ensure the message is delivered promptly.
Students who use or access a cell phone or smartwatch during the school day may have the device confiscated in accordance with San Diego Unified School District policies. Repeated violations may result in additional disciplinary action.
Thank you for partnering with us to create a safe, focused, and distraction-free learning environment where every student can thrive.
