The following currently enrolled SDUSD students in attendance on the school site assessment dates are eligible for GATE assessment.
2nd grade: all students are included as part of universal screening
3rd/4th grade: new students who have not been assessed
5th grade: new students who have not been assessed or who meet eligibility criteria for a reassessment.
How do I know my 5th grader is eligible for GATE re-testing?
Students who are eligible for re-testing will automatically be added to the re-test list by the school psychologist. If you have any further questions, please contact your student’s classroom teacher or school psychologist. The IT department runs a report and establishes the rosters for all grade levels using the criteria established by the district for testing and re-testing.
Do I, as a parent, need to take any action and ask for a re-test?
No. There is no action needed by the parents.
Does my student need to be re-tested for middle school GATE?
No. Once qualified, no re-testing is needed.
Does the district accept outside assessments for GATE designation?
Yes, the district can accept another district’s assessment to review for GATE eligibility. Once a student is enrolled in a district school, the school site staff will review the other district’s documentation and decide on a case-by-case basis.
Who administers the GATE testing?
GATE testing is administered by a SDUSD district school psychologist.
When does GATE testing happen?
GATE testing is administered throughout the school year. Each school site will be scheduled for specific dates during assessment windows which do not conflict with state testing.
Can GATE designation be appealed?
Yes, there is a GATE appeal process. Please contact your student’s school site, they can assist with the process.
Can a student who attends a private, charter or public school outside the district take the GATE assessment?
Students who are not currently enrolled in a San Diego Unified School District school are not eligible for GATE assessment. If additional information becomes available for resident students who are not enrolled at an SDUSD school site to be assessed, it will be posted here.
Please note: All charter schools within the district's geographical boundaries independently operate as their own LEA and function as a school district. Each charter school is allocated funds to operate and determines the programs and services offered to students and their families.
