I hope you are well!
News: I cannot give you grades for extra curricular work you do while the school is closed. I still highly recommend that you do Lexia and that you read. All and any school work you do while school is closed is extra curricular. That means I can't force you to do it and I'm not allowed to grade it. (If you are turning in late work that was due weeks and months ago, I will grade that and put it into PowerSchool.)
I don't know about you, but I am a little bit bored and I miss coming to school every day and talking to you all! Starting next Monday (March 23) I plan to do English class at 9am in the morning. You can join me in real time via zoom (I will provide a link and you can log on via your device or phone), or you can watch/listen to the recording of it afterwards.
We will start reading a new book together and I will suggest daily reading and writing for you. Please know that all this is optional since it is extra curricular.
I'm available by email kengan@sandi.net. Remember to be kind, both to your family members, friends, and yourself.
Take care,
Ms. E
Dear students and parents:
While we stay home from school, please consider keeping up your work on Lexia. NoRedInk is also available during this time. You can click the "learn" tab of NoRedInk and work on grammar and writing. Although students who do not do any of this will be excused from any grades in this period, I can give credit to students who do it. In other words, there is no penalty for not doing it, but it might still help your grade to do it.
Other things you can do to support your learning for English is read that independent reading book you have in your backpack. If you like audiobooks, I recommend checking out the free site librivox.org. It contains recordings made by volunteers from all over the world. Some of my absolute favorites available on Librivox is Treasure Island, Aesop's Fables, Call of the Wild, Wizard of Oz, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The public libraries are closed, but they still have online services that are available to the public, such as online books and audiobooks. Another online resource with many texts is https://www.commonlit.org/ . You can browse by title, topic, grade level, or genre.
San Diego Unified has made a collection of resources for continued learning opportunities for most subjects, according to grade level.
I expect to be available on email through this time away from school, and would love to hear from you!
Most importantly, I hope you remain healthy and well, and that I get to see you all again April 6.
Wishing you well,
Ms. Engan
