2023/2024 Family Listening Project
Snapshot
A snapshot helps to tell the story of what we are hearing. We shared these on Class Dojo and enlarged them onto posters and placed them on the front of the school. Please scroll down to see specific answers to questions and all the data we collected this year through surveys, sticker charts, focus groups, and empathy interviews.
We began the year by asking family members at our first Family Friday, Open House Night, and on Class Dojo to complete a two-question anonymous online survey about what they love about at Cherokee Point Elementary School and what areas need improvement.
25% of families responded. Here is what we heard:
How we developed our Listening Project: Using data from the Love and Improvement survey, the Healthy Kids Survey, attendance records, and academic performance, we developed a Listening Project to better understand family priorities. The Community Schools Committee designed this survey during a full-day session and a series of after-school meetings. They also set a plan to achieve 75 -100% participation.
Who developed our Listening Project: Both certificated and classified staff including teachers (UTK, 4th and 5th English only and Dual-Language), front desk staff, school nurse, counselor, principal, community school's coordinator, district staff, parents, and grandparents.
Engagement Strategy: The survey was printed in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese and distributed to teachers along with a school roster. Teachers marked off students on the roster and placed the completed surveys into a folder. Participation was anonymous for all educational partners. Family members who completed the survey were entered into drawings to win Target clothing vouchers donated by The Assistance League and new toys donated by Courtesy Chevrolet. Classes with 100% survey participation had the option to go on a field trip to the San Diego Zoo, attend a Fern Street Circus assembly, or enjoy a pizza party all funded through the Community Schools grant. Families and students were also invited to enjoy free tacos at our Family STEAM Night funded through the Community School's grant.
Coding Process: With any open ended questions, themes were pulled from responses.
Who participated in the coding process: Community schools coordinator, district staff, school nurse, a parent, principal, community member, and counselor.
Participation Rate: 254 unique families (one survey per family) responded. That is 95% percent.
