KEY FACTS

Why is the mascot changing?

Assembly Bill 3074 (the Racial Mascots Bill) was passed by the California State Legislature in September 2024, making it unlawful for terms connected to Native American culture-including "Chieftain"-to be used as high school mascots. Local tribal leaders have voiced their support for AB 3074 and expect SDUSD and Clairemont HS to follow the law. See additional information on the FAQ page.

Final mascot decision by Naming Committee and submit to SDUSD Board for approval

Dates:
- September 24: Agenda (no further suggestions will be accepted after this date)
- October 7: Agenda (discussion and narrowing down suggestions)
- November 5: Agenda (discussion and narrowing down suggestions)
- December 3: Agenda (discussion and narrowing down suggestions)
- January 7: Agenda (finalization of "finalist" suggestions)
- January 20: Agenda (finalization and naming of new mascot)
Time: 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

NOTE - any CHS community member is eligible to attend the Town Hall meetings to take part in this process even if they are not part of the Naming Committee.
