As San Diego Unified prepares to introduce its upcoming AI Policy and Guidelines, this panel discussion will provide K–12 administrators, managers and supervisors with an opportunity to explore the rapidly evolving role of Artificial Intelligence in education. Participants will hear from policy experts, industry partners, and post-secondary educators to understand how to support safe, ethical, and innovative AI integration at their sites by moving from a focus on protection and prevention, to one of purposeful innovation.
Dave Beller is the Cybersecurity Architect for the San Diego Unified School District. With over 25 years of experience in IT, he has lead major initiatives such as deploying Blocksi content filtering, classroom management, and student safety monitoring. Dave holds a degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance from Western Governor’s University, along with over a dozen industry certifications in IT, Networking, and Cybersecurity, and is currently working on a master’s degree in Cybersecurity.
Ashley Renick is the Senior Programs Lead for the West Coast at aiEDU, a nonprofit working to ensure all students are ready to live, work, and thrive in a world where AI is everywhere. She partners with school systems and education leaders to build AI literacy and readiness, supporting guidance and policy development, leading professional learning, and working alongside districts as they explore responsible and effective uses of AI and how to implement them in their communities. Her career spans classroom teaching, social work, and direct partnership work with districts and schools, with a consistent commitment to ensuring students and educators have what they need to thrive. In her current role, she collaborates closely with education leaders as schools navigate the opportunities and challenges of AI in education.
Jen Roberts is a National Board Certified teacher at Point Loma High School with nearly 30 years teaching grades 7-12 in San Diego Unified. A Google Certified Innovator since 2011 and the 2022 CUE Outstanding Educator, she co-authored Power Up: Making the Shift to 1:1 Teaching and Learning and has been at the forefront of classroom technology since bringing 1:1 laptops to her students in 2008. Her work on AI as an equity tool was recently featured in Scientific American, and she currently serves on California's SB 1288 Statewide AI Workgroup. She blogs at LitandTech.com.
Brian Weston serves as the Dean of Online and Distributed Learning at the San Diego Community College District. His background as an ASL Interpreter shaped his commitment to student and faculty support. He leads the Districtwide Distance Education Steering Committee and the Student Textbook Affordability Committee. Brian is focused on providing access through technology, with AI serving as a helpful tool for students and faculty.
Satomi Rash-Zeigler is the inaugural Executive Director of the UC San Diego Labor Center. She is committed to fostering equitable and inclusive workplaces, supporting labor education, and empowering diverse workers across various industries through bridging theory and practice to drive positive change in the labor movement and advance social and economic justice for all.
Alina Nguyen is a proud student representative on the San Diego Unified School Board and a senior at Herbert Hoover High School. A devoted scholar, leader, and community advocate, Alina has spent her high school years immersed in service, scholarship, and leadership development. She is an active member of the SDUSD Service Clubs, where she has helped organize community-driven initiatives such as food drives, canyonland and beach cleanups, and toy and clothing donations. She is also a dedicated participant in the FACES for the Future and the Jack Kent Cooke Young and College Scholars Program.
