The "i before e, except after c" rule states that you write i before e in most words, but flip to e before i after the letter c when the letters make a long "e" sound. [1, 2]

Sound Exceptions (When EI sounds like "A")
The extended version of the rule says ei is also used when the letters sound like a long "a": [1, 2]
