I enjoy working with paper as my preferred medium. My works deal with subjects which are often mundane and ordinary; things that we look at every day and take for granted. My aim is to raise these items to a higher level as I believe there is so much beauty and uniqueness in them. I think of my paper collages as an ode to the normal and typical and strive to elevate these objects.
I first sketch my subject to get a sense of the form. I like to exaggerate the color and light to create drama. I then use pieces of paper that I rip to create bold chunks of color.
Hand embroidery and sewing have been a huge part of my life - I learned Kutch embroidery while pursuing my Masters in Fine arts, drawing and painting with a specialization in textile design and I look for opportunities when I can incorporate thread into my works to create areas of interest.

For me, a portal is a personal symbol representing a third space... neither here nor there. My identity as a mixed, bisexual, artist/teacher has gifted me liminal insight into multiple worlds but not belonging to either. It is through my art that I seek to explore how portals are connectors. I see portal opening as an exercise in personal and community ritual. Creative acts of alchemical power that require mutuality, collaboration, and most importantly, embodied conscious attention in the presence of self and others. Often these portal are made with groups of people, adding another element of spontaneity to the creation. Each portal is as unique as the moment it was made as well as each person who was involved in creating it. I aim to answer the question... what life lessons can we learn as individuals and as a society from the metaphor of a portal? How can we embrace liminality as a tool of resistance in a binary world? How is imagination a form of resistance?
