Schwa is a quick, relaxed, neutral vowel sound that is very close to a short /ŭ/ or /ĭ/ vowel sound. The schwa sound allows unstressed syllables in spoken words to be said more quickly, so it is easier to place the main beats on the stressed syllables. The schwa does not have an exact and standard pronunciation. Any vowel can make a schwa sound – ‘the lazy, unstressed vowel’. The schwa also allows for some whole syllables to be unpronounced to allow for the correct articulation of the word.
