By the end of week 1, you will be able to:
Browse open source CAD libraries and download design files for the purpose of 3D printing and Laser Cutting
Understand and follow the digital fabrication process for 3D printing and Laser Cutting
Select & evaluate a final project idea and develop a Project Proposal
Type: Group Activity (6 Students)
Description:
SuperMakers Plan a Party! 🥳: A group of SuperMakers decided to host a party.
As SuperMakers, technology gives you superpowers! (Ex: Ironman)
Most superheroes have gadget(s) such as Thore's Hammer, Batmobile... etc. As a SuperMakers, each group would use gadget(s) from a list of 12 common digital fabrication and makerspace tools and equipment:
3D printer
Laser Cutter
CNC milling
CNC router
Vinyl cutter machine
Arduino
Hammer
Sanding paper
Grinding machine
Blower
Driller
Tape
Each group of SuperMakers and instructors will plan together how they would use these tools/equipment to execute the party
Requirements:
Planning (Breakout Rooms/20 Minutes): Each group need to plan the following:
Place: Where are you going to host the party (It could be anywhere: Forest, Dessert, Ocean, Clouds, Street, Venus.. etc), go wild!
Activities: what kinds of activities are you going to have during the party?
Menu: What are you going to feed your guests?
Guests: Who are you going to invite to your party?
Presentation (Main Room/3 Minutes):
One member from each group of SuperMakers will present the team plan for the party
We will vote on the best party concept and utilization of digital fabrication tools!
Session Mode: Online via Google Meet
Session Outcomes:
Take a walkthrough of the project proposal template & requirements of Milestone #1 of the project proposal
Discuss the final project idea with your instructor
Session Recordings:
Follow the video tutorials and guides below to understand how you can prepare design files for digital fabrication and operate a 3D printer and a Laser Cutter
LASER CUTTING
3D PRINTING
Fab Lab Egypt
Operation Manual: Prusa MK3 3D Printer || Prusa MK3 S Plus 3D Printer
Software: Ultimaker Cura
Deadline: Before EoWeek Session
Session Mode: In-person @ Fab Lab
Session Outcomes:
Discuss video tutorials and address challenges or problems
Work with your peers in a group activity: Fabrication Challenge!
Discuss assignment idea with your instructor: Present potential design files for 3D printing & Laser Cutting before fabrication
Discuss your progress on the final project proposal with your instructor
Fabrication Challenge! (Expand to View Description & Requirements)
Task 1: Use the Laser Cutting machine to digitally fabricate Dalmatian dog KeyChain
Requirements:
Download the provided *DXF file “Dalmatian dog”
Import the file in the Laser Cutter Software
Move the file from the center to the top left corner
Remove extra lines and rectangle
Lock the proportion between width and height then scale the design down to 50%
Add 4*4 mm circle in the dog’s right ear to make it a keychain
Color the design lines in 3 different colors based on the desired operation:
Black for cutting
Red for scanning
Blue for speed cut
Set proper values for mode, speed, and power in order to reach expected output (check this reference picture), your final output MUST be identical to the reference
Duplicate 3 more versions, to fabricate 4 samples using the Laser Cutter
Task 2: Use the 3D Printing machine to digitally fabricate T-rex Minifigure
Requirements:
Download the provided *STL file: T-rex STL
Open Ultimaker Cura and select YOUR 3D Printer
Import the file in Ultimaker Cura
Adjust the orientation and/or Supports parameters in order to have minimal or no supports while maintaining proper quality of printing
3D Printing time must NOT exceed 15 minutes maximum! So you need to set proper values for the following parameter:
Infill
Layer Height
Scale
Fabricate one sample using the 3D Printer (Check this reference picture)
Prepare design files and fabricate models of your choice using 3D Printing and Laser Cutting.
Part 1: 3D Print a model of your choice (Expand to read Description and Technical Requirements)
Description:
Browse an opensource CAD library (Thingiverse), pick a 3D model of your choice, and download it in an *.STL format for the purpose of 3D printing
Use Ultimaker Cura Software to prepare the *.STL file that you downloaded from CAD library (A single piece model like a simple tool, mini-figure, toy, keychain..etc)
The printing time must not exceed 90 minutes. If it exceeds the time try to scale down the model.
Export the .gcode of each of the files as shown in the tutorials
Before your visit to Fab Lab, prepare the following files on a Flash memory:
*.STL files for the model before slicing
Full screenshot image of Cura after slicing: make sure that model position and orientation on the bed, in addition to estimated Time and Weight are clear in the screenshot
*.gcode files of the model after slicing
During your visit to Fab Lab, operate and use the 3D Printer to fabricate your model
Technical Requirements:
An opensource library is browsed and a proper model with the correct format (.STL) was downloaded
The 3D model is sliced at proper parameter values for: orientation, supports, layer height, infill, and brim
The 3D model is successfully fabricated using 3D printing with adequate quality
Part 2: Laser Cut a model of your choice (Expand for Description and Technical Requirements)
Description:
Browse an opensource CAD library (3axis.co), pick a 2D model of your choice, and download it in a *.DXF format for the purpose of Laser Cutting (A single piece model like a keychain or a cup coaster)
Use Laser Cutter software to prepare the *.DXF file for Laser Cutting
Save the file in a proper format (*.rld for example)
For your visit to Fab Lab, bring the file on a Flash memory
During your visit to Fab Lab, operate and use the laser cutter to fabricate your model
Technical Requirements:
An opensource library is browsed and a proper model with the correct format (.DXF) was downloaded
The 2D model is prepared for laser cutting at proper settings for cutting and engraving
The 2D model was successfully fabricated using Laser Cutter with proper quality
Make sure to document your Assignment for Week 1 in the Maker Journal covering the following requirements:
Process Documentation:
Tools: Describe software tools and machines that you used in your assignment
Design: Describe how did you get the design files? How did you prepare the design files for 3D printing and laser cutting?
Implementation/Fabrication: Describe the fabrication process and outcomes of the assignment
Media: Provide supporting images and videos to demonstrate the design and implementation processes
Learning Documentation:
Learning from Mistakes: Describe problems and challenges that you faced, and briefly describe solutions
Community of Learning: Highlight an advice or idea provided by a peer or an instructor that helped in solving a problem or a challenge. Or an advice that YOU provided to help your peer(s)
