cool glasses
this week i am designing a cool glass. the design will be mixed.
the front frame will be made by laser cutter and the side arms will be made by 3D printer then i will attach the side arms to the front frame with screws and nuts.
i was inspired by the example that was uploaded on the portal
but i went simple as i like rounded glasses
i used fusion 360 software to design both the front frame and the side arms.
then i will use laser cutter to make the frame , the material will be wood, and 3D printer to make the side arms, the material will be PLA.
front frame
I will use El Malky ML64 CO2 laser cutter in designing my glass frame
The design will be drawn using cut tool that is included in the laser cutter machine. Plywood with 3mm thickness will be a good choice for my design.
I will use LaserCad software in my designing as it's used for designing and doing adjustments of .dxf extension files for the purpose of Laser Cutting

I will use Creality Ender 3 3D Printer in designing glass arms, as this design is 3D and is made of PLA material.
I will use Ultimaker Cura software in my designing as it's used for designing and doing adjustments of .stl extension files for the purpose of 3D printing.

front face and side arm
To make the frame i made 1 circle from the origin with dimensions 50 mm and another one smaller in it with diameter 35 mm, they are fully defined, then i added a circle at one edge and a rectangle at the other end, i made sure every thing is fully defined and trimmed extra parts. i added smaal circle with diameter 3.3 in the middle of the semi circle for the screw.
Next, i created a mirror line and mirrored the design, now it's ready and i pressed finish sketch.
Last, i saved it as .dxf, i put the file on laser cad , i chose cut and adjusted the parameters to speed 10 and power 65.
for the arm, first i designed it 2D on fusion with dimensions 140 cm length (rectangle and 2 arcs) and 10 mm width.
- Then i created a rectangle on a perpendicular axis to it and put a small circle in the middle of dimensions 3.3 mm for the screw.
- Next, i pressed extrude 10 mm for the arms (join) and extrude -10 mm for the hole (cut)
- finally i added fillet 1mm to the edges and pressed right click on body -- save as mesh and saved it as .stl file to open it on cura.
- i chose the material of the arm to be white plastic (ABS)
i opened the dxf file on laser cad, added my name and adjusted the parameters
Laser cutter Parameters:
cut: power 65, speed 10
Engrave: power 40, speed 200
speed cut: power 30, speed 200
Finally to save the file, i pressed file -- export -- *.dxf file, then i sent it to the operator by slack.. now it's ready for fabrication
adjusting glass frame on laser cad
implementing glass frame by laser cutter
First, i opened my file using ultimate cura software, i chose the printer type (creality ender 3/ ender 3v2), material PLA,
Second, I rotated the arm so that the maximum area will touch the bed, made a copy and mirrored it to have the second arm. Then i chose the parameters for default (layer height) to be 0.2 and the infill to be 20
Third, I won't need support and adhesion for my design as the shape is supported and a large part is touching the floor.
Then, i pressed slicing, the time is 90 minutes, weight is 12 gm
Finally to save the file, i pressed save to disk -- *.gcode file, then i saved it on 3D printer memory card.. now it's ready for fabrication
adjusting place, parameters of 2 arms on cura
implementing 2 arms by 3D printer
frame design on fusion 360
when i removed the mirror line in my glass design, half the design become under defined, i asked my coach help to make all the design fully defined, he told me to move every line to see how it moves, then put dimensions from origin or any defined line and use costrains to make all the design fully defined
i made the thickness of the arm 10 mm so at the printing i found that one arm will take 1hr and 18 minutes, so both arms will take more than 90 minutes.
i found that also this thickness wont be cozy for the client when he wear the glasses
so i changed the thickness to 5mm, by that the 2 arms took exactly the max. time (90 minutes)

what i learnt in designing in fusion 360 will help me to design and implement the candy box body.
i learnt designing products by myself instead of downloading them ready made from websites
