side bike
This week's assignment is to make a pencils holder with at least 2 sections that can hold different stationary tools, this time I wanted to make something that is a life application and can be reflected on the pencil holder with a number of sections, the first thing came to my mind is the side bike so i started searching for its shape and did my best to make a shape close to it.
for the design itself (2d) i used fusion 360 software in addition to rd works for nesting the design.
machine used for 2d printing: laser cutting machine El Malky
first of all i was struggling on how i`m going to start my design, start drawing the slots side but it wasn`t smooth so i changed the plan and started with the T-Slots sides & it was a lot more easier for me.
my design consists of 6 parts so i put each & every one in a separated component.
For the main base I decided on its dimensions by measuring a comfortable spot on my desk that I want to put the holder on it, then I took the dimensions of the sticky notes I usually use for the external box dimensions.
now its time to decide how I want to separate my holder sections and height, I separated it into 2 equal halves and for the height I measured my pencils so I can see which height is suitable and the pencils will not fall from it.
for the last part which is the bike - shaped part, it took a while from me as i was a bit Dispersed by lots of designs but that was the final design.
2D Fabrication
my whole design this time was 2d so, i used the laser cutting machine.
at first I uploaded the dxf file into rd works software on the PC connected to the machine.
ensured the cut & scan option`s speed and power are correct (30,55) for cut & (300,30) for scan
adjusted the origin point from the machine buttons ➡️ Go scale from the rd works software to track the area of my project on the wooden board ➡️ Upload ➡️ Start.
Most of my challenges in this assignment were how to imagine the T-slots' places, the parts design & how they will connect with each other so, i started by drawing it on paper & one of the instructors advised me to draw my shape as a rectangle + square only then edit what I want in this rectangle and it was a good point and helped me a lot through my designing.
