Week 03 - Journal
Ideation
Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)
The first inspiration was from an actual product that is divided into several segments to hold different things. I got inspired by this one as it is very functional and works as a real desk station which I need in my everyday life.
The Second inspiration was from the architectural feature that I like the arches. I got inspired by this photo to make the pen holder using the arch unit.
Tool Chain
Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?
1- I got inspired by the internet, from Pinterest especially.
2- Then I used Fusion 360 for designing and implementing the model as it is simple and provides a quick assembly with joints.
3- Then the model is exported as STL file to be imported into Cura for the 3D print.
4- Then I should print it using 3D printer and PLA material.
Design/Preparation Process
Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?
After get inspired, I went directly to fusion 360 and started modeling. I had two different models but I settled on one of them after consulting Amany.
I proceeded with the second choice
In order to design the second choice I proceeded by:
1- Drawing a circle sketch on the x,y plane, then constructing two offset planes from this plane in order to draw 2 more sketches.
3- shell the shape
5- I made the bottom by extrusion to the same first sketch. Then I draw a sketch on the upper constructed plane to make the top of the shape.
2- loft between these different sketches.
4- I drew the arch profile, and then extruded it with intersect option to form the one arched segment. Then I made a circular pattern.
6- Finally, I filleted the ends of the top of the pen holder and chamfered the bottom.
Finally the preparation of 3D printing
I exported STL file from fusion to be imported into cura to make the suitable adjustment to be printed within 90 mins.
In my case I used adhesive, 0.2 mm layer height, 9 grams in 1h and 29 mins to be printed.
Development/Implementation Process
Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?
Steps
Final Product
In order to print the model, I went to the lab and the lab specialist welcomed me and my colleague. Then the steps went as follow:
1- the fab lab specialist checked the sliced object, and she told me to choose the right version of the machine which is Prusa I3 MK3.
2- we discussed if I wanted to support it or not. Which ended with no support. But she suggested reducing the speed so the shape could be printed smoothly. It was reduced to 50.
3- He told me to make sure that the file temperature file is 200 degrees to suit the PLA material white transparent material.
4- Then I copied the gcode file into the printer SD card after renaming it with the grams, mins, filling, color, and layer depth. That was 9 grams, 85 mins, 20% infill, transparent white, 0.2mm.
5- I started to print by cleaning the bed, and then chose the file and begin to print.
6- The printing time expanded. I am not sure if it was due to the low speed or from the machine itself and its temperature went high.
7- The printed pen holder was 9 grams in white transparent color and 125 mins.
8- Finally, it has like small hair. The lab specialist told me next time we could use the option of retraction to prevent this hair that ddependson the material itself.
Overcoming Challenges
What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises? How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)
Challenge 01: The first challenge was in the design phase of the pen holder. after making the loft, I wanted to make the emboss feature but it can't be on the lofted surface.
The solution was to make extrude intersect then circular pattern.
Challenge 01
Challenge 02: It was during the fabrication. In order to ensure the quality of the model, it was proposed to reduce the speed of the printer to be 50 instead of 60 and cura gave 85 mins. While printing, I noticed that the printer took around 48 mins to do the base only.
The solution was to speed up the printer it self from the options- tone- speed to be 70. But, we could do it immediately. we waited until the printer did the critical part and then speeded it up while doing the upper part. Unfortunately, it ended up taking 125 mins.
WOW!
What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?
The modeling of the Lego was an amazing experience and a learning opportunity.
