Hogwarts logo
The Elder wand
I've grown up watching Harry Potter for my entire Childhood and I've always wanted to get a wand!
So I've decided to print the Elder wand and I found the files on thingverse.
Also I wanted to make a coaster for wizards using Hogwarts famous logo, found it on instructables.
This week's assignment No muggles are allowed.
Ultimaker cura software for slicing and preparing 3D designs to be printed.
prusa i3 mk3 for 3D printing using PLA.
LaserCad software for preparing 2D design to be cut.
Malky ML64 CO2 for laser cutting using plywood.
Acrylic colors to paint the coaster.
For the 3D printer, I used ultimaker Cura software to customize the design.
I had to scale down the wand to fit to the printer height.
For the laser cutter I used Laser Cad to prepare the logo.
The design is pretty simple, you have to cut the outer line and engrave every outline inside to make it.
For cutting the coaster I used the laser cutter with the help of fab lab specialist. I downloaded the DXF file to the machine, The cut power was 65% and speed was 25mm/sec, and 300% for the engrave with 50mm/sec speed. first we had to check the focus and the origin before cutting, then pressed start and waited for the machine to do its magic.
In progress..
For printing the wand, at first I unloaded the filament spool because I wanted to use white filament, then insert the SD card where I've already uploaded the gcode.
The machine has to calibrate the bed before printing and then it heats up gradually till reaching the specified temperature of the nozzle and the bed. After that it starts printing for about an hour and 2 mins.
I used 0.2 profile, 40% infill and slice 1 hour, 2mins and size 50% . I also used supports and adhesion.
The STL file I downloaded from thingverse was too big to fit in the printer and I had to scale it down 50%.
At first I wanted to print it diagonally but it had too many supports.
Thanks to ahmed ibrahim, saeed & mego whom told me to print it vertically because the current orientation would have a very rough finish.
I would print some parts in my final project and enclose the components in a box or something I fabricate using the laser cutter
Swipe for colors :)
While cutting super mario i've learned how different engraving power can affect the final output on wood, power 35% will result in light burning to the wood but still good and can be noted, while power 50% or higher will result in heavy burning.
When printing you don't always need to use the adhesive property, also sometimes in order to limit the required time for printing, you will get a rough resolution, however if you minimize the size you'd get good resolution.
