Zearn

I’m excited to share that our class is currently learning with Zearn Math. Zearn Math is a top-rated math curriculum that personalizes learning for each student. During this extended learning time with Zearn Math, your child will learn and practice math concepts using Independent Digital Lessons.

While working through Independent Digital Lessons, your child will learn and practice new concepts at his/her own pace. Independent Digital Lessons include fun warm-ups to build math foundations, interactive videos to learn new concepts, paper and pencil work to transfer learning, and lots of supportive, precise, and personalized feedback.

When your child signs on to Zearn they complete a lesson in the following sequence:

  • Number Gym is individually adaptive. It gives students practice in decomposing and composing numbers, understanding place value and base ten with some operations built in.
  • FluencyThose fast paced fluency practice that can be titled any of the following:
      • Sprint
      • Multiply Mania
      • Pair Compare
      • Totally Times
      • Fraction Action
      • Mix and Match
      • Blasts
  • Guided Practice Students learn new concepts and extend their understanding during the Guided Practice portion of Independent Digital Lessons. Students experience one of four different Guided Practice activities—Story Time, Math Chat, Learning Lab, or Z-Squad. Each activity creates a rich learning environment for students through interactive and multisensory videos featuring real on-screen teachers, digital manipulatives, and paper-and-pencil Student Notes. There are also differences between specific activities intentionally designed to help students develop along additional dimensions
      • During the Guided Practice portion of Independent Digital Lessons, students are prompted to complete problems in their paper Student Notes to transfer their software-based learning and strengthen knowledge retention. After solving an un-scaffolded problem in their notes, students are also prompted to check and correct their work. These Student Notes serve as a reference that students can use throughout the remainder of the Independent Digital Lesson and during future learning. There are typically 3–4 problems in a Guided Practice experience, and one usually includes paper Student Notes.
      • If there are student notes for the lesson it can be downloaded and printed individually from the guided lesson screen. It is found in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
  • Tower of Power After completing Fluency and Guided Practice, students demonstrate understanding in the Tower of Power. Students need to answer all of the questions correctly to complete the Tower of Power and unlock the next Independent Digital Lesson.
      • As students work through the Tower of Power, embedded remediation provides just the right amount of support to help them stay engaged and continue learning independently. For students struggling with a concept, these remediation supports can include more scaffolded manipulatives or additional interactive videos that break down the question in a different way.
      • In the Tower of Power, this embedded remediation is called a Boost. If students make a mistake in a Tower of Power problem, a Boost breaks down the question into smaller steps with more supportive manipulatives to allow students to understand and correct their mistakes.

  • Here are some questions to ask your child to support their learning with Zearn Math!
    • What did you discuss with your teacher and friends in math small group time?
    • What concrete materials did you get to learn with in Small Group today?
    • What are your favorite parts of a Digital Lesson?
    • When you get a challenging problem, how do you work through it?·
    • How many Digital Lesson badges have you earned?
