What is a referral?
An office referral is essentially a staff member saying "I need help with this student" to the administration. It is used for when a student's behavior needs to be addressed by the administration team either because (a) the behavior exhibited was severe in nature or (b) there is a pattern of poor behavior that cannot be corrected using in-class remedies.
When do I fill out a referral?
For most behaviors, a referral should not be used until at least three means of intervention have been tried (including positive contact with the parents/guardians) and were not successful. In cases of severe behavior, such as an intoxicated student, an immediate referral is appropriate. For guidance on navigating minor/severe behavior and available interventions: consult the Behavior Management Flow Chart.
How do I submit a referral?
In cases of severe behavior, use Panther Text-A-Tip (831-244-0095) to get immediate help. Follow up with a formal referral form as soon as practical (generally at the end of the class period).
In all other cases, fill out the Student Incident Referral on Synergy.

When filling out the form, first fill out all the time and incident details. Write a description of the behavior including its duration, next, making sure to be as concise and clear as possible.
Choose the violation that is most appropriate. Next, choose the student(s) involved. You can mark "student," "offender," and "bystander or witness." Then choose a possible motivation. Please make an educated guess based on what happened before the incident and what they gained by doing the action.
Finish up by showing what interventions (and their dates) you have tried before the referral. We ask you do at least 3 interventions, including positive contact with the students' guardians, before resorting to a referral - except for severe problems that require immediate attention (Note: A voicemail is not sufficient for parent/guardian contact).
Do I have to suspend a student from my class to submit a referral?
No. If you have a student who is showing repeated behavior issues and you have tried at least 3 different interventions including parent/guardian contact, you may submit a referral even if you elect to keep the student in class.
Do I have to submit a referral when suspending a student from my class?
In most cases, yes. Either the student is being removed for severe behavior (e.g. intoxicated or violent) and needs a referral for informational purposes or is being removed for repeated behavior violations that previous interventions (including parent contact) have failed to correct and are now disrupting the learning environment. When the office receives a student without a referral, it is difficult to provide interventions without knowing more information from the staff member who sent the student.
Where do I get a referral form?
