El Grito Festival written by: Yearbook Staffer
El Grito, a Mexican Independence Day, which occurred on September 16, 1810, was a call for the end of Spanish rule, for racial equality, and for the redistribution of land. The speech of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a catholic priest and a revolutionary leader effectively launched the Mexican War of Independence on the years 1810-1821. To this day, citizens around the country act out the history cry during the celebration, including the President who shouts out "Viva Mexico!" above the crowds in Mexico City. What are some of the traditions that is shared on this day? One of the many cherished and enjoyed traditions is the vibrant parade of colors that you will see from attire, decorations, and show much more to showcase the rich cultural diversity of Mexico.
