Attendance and tardies will be recorded each day. AM Kindergarten runs from 8:10-11:35 a.m., and Full-Day Kindergarten runs from 8:10-2:45 p.m. The classroom door will open at 8:10 a.m., and centers will begin at that time. After 8:30 a.m. your child will be marked tardy. If you arrive after 8:30, you must take your child to the office for a tardy slip. All children will be dropped off in the morning at Big Circle Drop-Off. AM Kindergarten students will be picked up at Little Circle at 11:40 a.m., and Full-Day students will be picked up at Little Circle between 2:45 and 3:05. Students with a 5th-8th grade sibling will be picked up at Big Circle at 3:00.
You must inform the school office if your child will be absent from school.
Book orders will be sent home monthly. You can purchase great books at great prices from the Scholastic Book Clubs. Please make a check payable to the book club or pay online.
Please pack your children a healthy snack in a Ziploc baggie, labeled with their name, to be eaten after first recess.
Be sure to pack your children a water bottle each day.
Please package your children's lunch foods in containers which they can open without assistance from a teacher.
You may bring special treats for the class on your child's birthday.
A packet of 5-6 pages of homework will go home with your children every Friday. This packet will include a variety of math, phonics and/or writing pages. Your children are responsible for completing and returning their homework to the homework tray by the following Friday. Homework packets are designed to be completed by the kindergartner with minimal parental assistance. Please complete homework in pencil.
Each week a memory verse will be assigned which goes along with our Bible story. Your child needs to memorize it by Friday. The verse will be written on the cover of the homework packet for the week and it will be listed under the Memory tab on the Salem kindergarten google site.
We will attend chapel weekly on Wednesdays. Your children may bring an offering. Offerings are designated for special mission projects. We encourage children to bring their own money, no matter how little, because it teaches them about giving!
Kindergarten students will visit the Salem library on Tuesdays. They will check out a library book and bring it home for the week.
Library books are to be returned to the proper drop-off location in your children's classroom. Kindergartners need to return their library books by Tuesday in order to check out a new library book.
We will have share time the first week of each new month, starting in October. Your child may bring one item to share. Please practice your child's “share speech” at home. All pets will be shared at a special “Pet Share Day” in June.
Report cards come home at the end of each quarter, and parent-teacher conferences are scheduled at the end of first quarter. Please do not limit yourself to these “checkpoints”. Your teacher will be happy to meet with you whenever it is needed.
Birthday parties are a BIG issue in kindergarten! Our goal is to keep feelings from being hurt and to teach good manners. We understand (and advise) that parties at this age ought to be limited in size. Our wish is that parties not be discussed at school and invitations not be handed out at school unless everyone (or all the girls/all the boys) has been invited.
We take field trips throughout the year to various places. You will be invited to drive. Younger siblings can look forward to kindergarten field trips when they are old enough for kindergarten. We ask you do not take kindergarten children out of school to join another class field trip. All children must bring a booster seat on the day of the trip.
Kindergarten children are learning self-regulation, and we encourage them to be responsible for their own behavior. There are rules and consequences on campus. The system we use includes positive reinforcement, the marble jar, clip chart, stamp charts, time-outs, and parent conferences, if necessary. We are all forgiven children of God, and there is lots of grace in kindergarten!
UNIFORMS
Salem kindergartners are required to wear the Salem uniforms. Please refer to the Salem Student Parent Handbook for further uniform instructions.
