Virginia-Tiered Systems of Support

Andrew Lewis Middle School is a VTSS school. The Virginia Tiered System of Supports integrates academics, behavior, and mental wellness into a single decision-making framework. The process involves universal screening, tiered (or levels of) intervention strategies, and progress monitoring to meet the needs of students both academically and behaviorally. The progress of each student is monitored and results are used to make decisions about further instruction or intervention. Andrew Lewis Middle School has begun the VTSS process by focusing first on behavior. VTSS supports: teaching, modeling, practicing, intervening, and acknowledging students for appropriate behavior. Our students show this behavior while following The Wolverine Way.

Why VTSS?

The purposes of the Virginia Tiered System of Supports are to:

· identify and prevent potential learning problems

· provide additional academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports for individual student needs.

This approach allows school divisions, schools, and communities to provide multiple levels of support to students in a more effective and efficient, clearly defined process.

Meet Our Wonderful Wolverines

At Andrew Lewis Middle School, we are committed to recognizing students who follow The Wolverine Way. Teachers nominate students who are safe, responsible, and respectful Wolverines. Each Friday, the principal draws the name of a 6^th grader, 7^th grader, and 8^th grader. This is done live, over the announcements. Students win prizes from the community; Salem City businesses donated several great prizes for our students.

Meet The VTSS Sunshine Committee

The Sunshine Committee is a group of Wonderful Wolverines selected by teachers. As part of VTSS and The Wolverine Way, the Sunshine Committee recognizes our Wonderful Wolverine teachers each month.

We have amazing teachers at our school. Our teachers teach and model The Wolverine Way each day.

The Wolverine Way

Check out the resources we use to teach students our expectations. We use a behavior matrix to teach (and reteach) students how to behave in class, the bathroom, and all shared areas of the school. Each teacher uses The Wolverine Way is his/her classroom to insure that our students are safe, responsible, and respectful.

What can you do at home to support VTSS?

Learn about the behavioral expectations at school and discuss them with your student, including examples of how these expectations help them learn and participate in school

Ask your student about his/her behavior at school.

Praise your student when his/her positive behavior is acknowledged.

Keep in touch with your student’s teachers.
