Middle School Speech and Debate Information and Frequently Asked Questions

1. What category will my child compete in? 

   1. As coaches we will help your child find their category. The choice will be made based on their interests, our assessment of their abilities and open spots on the team. In speech categories speeches are cut by coaches and students are given options to choose from. 

   2. CATEGORIES: Middle School Congressional Debate, Middle School Interp, Middle School Declamation, Middle School Original Oratory

   3. MS Congress does practice as a group, all others are individual. 

2. How long is the MS Season?

   1. Middle School competitions for the South Range Team will start at the end of October and last until late December. There are other MS tournaments but we do not participate. There is an optional MS State Tournament in March. We will consider attending this based on students' wishes to participate AND location of the tournament. 

   2. All please note: Each participant is required to have a judge. This is not optional and will affect participation. We do offer judge training. 

3. When will MS Speech and Debate practice? 

   1. Practices will start in late September. Each student will have a personal practice time on Monday/Tuesday and we run practice rounds on Thursdays. We try to keep MS practices early in the afternoon, however all students can not be directly after school. We are flexible and do our best to accommodate. 

4. What if my child participates in other activities?

   1. We do our best to be flexible and accommodate schedule conflicts. When we schedule practices we do ask students for a list of conflicts. Our policies regarding missed practices are outlined in our team contract. Tournaments are NOT mandatory. 

5. How will we receive information? 

   1. We communicate with both parents and students via remind. FOR MS STUDENTS: Send a text to 81010 with the message @srsadms

   3. We also have a web page. Go to the SR schools page and then Departments, then performing arts. 

6. How can coaches be contacted if we have questions?

   1. Feel free to email the head coach Nicole Fryfogle at Nfryfogle@southrange.org 

   2. Once you are signed up for Remind you can communicate with Coach Fryfogle through the remind app. 

   3. There will be a MANDATORY parent meeting in September for all team members.
