Lincoln Middle School

6th, 7th, and 8th grade Science

Hello, My name is Audrey Williams. This is my fourth year at LMS and my 35th year teaching middle school and high school. I moved back to San Angelo 3 years ago and I love it here. The students, staff, and administrators at Lincoln Middle School are wonderful.

I was born in San Angelo, Texas. I attended Crockett and Bowie Elementary, Glenn Jr. High, and graduated from Central High School. I received my Bachelors of Science degree in Education from UT at Dallas. I started my teaching career in Richardson Independent School District and taught there for 30 years. I have two daughters, Sara and Hayley. Hayley graduated from medical school currently is working in the ER as a resident in Jacksonville, Florida. My daughter Sara, her husband Luke, and my granddaughter Elaine live in California. Sara is a professor at Fresno State University. I have one dog, Dirk. He's a wienie dogs. I rescued a kitty last August and now I have two more kitties, Mimi and Kiki.

Why do I teach?? Why do I teach at Lincoln Middle School? I did not want to teach school. I wanted to work with numbers or words but not humans. I wanted to make money, I couldn’t imagine being surrounded by youth all day. I wanted to end up with a nice big property on a lake. I made up my mind that I could be the end to my means and set off on my course. I said yes to all opportunities and set off on an adventure of a lifetime. At 28, I found myself pregnant, not married but with a man I loved. He died when our daughter was 13 months old. Suddenly, overnight on a Saturday night right before Father’s Day. That was 35 years ago. So… I went to the nearest college, spoke with an advisor about what to do. How do I raise a daughter by myself? What was the way to a quick degree? Teaching! “ What can I teach?” I asked. If you want a job, I was told, special education or science. So that’s what I did. I had too!

I entered immediately and I loved the education of the education classes. It felt like I belonged and as I completed assignments, I found A huge compassion for others. I always had a heart that understood differences and difficulties and achievement in ways that were not ordinarily measured. I weighed pride and prejudice into my consciousness and thought about my ability to teach. I could teach and I did just that. My first job was at Forest Meadow Jr. High in Richardson ISD. Some of the community called it Forest Ghetto. I was the 4th teacher that year for a group of students in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. I taught social studies. I had no clue how to reach this group so I cared about them. They didn’t trust me and thought that if they could make it painful enough for me that I would abandon them like the 3 teachers they had before. Instead, I loved them. I put together a behavior system based on earning thousands of points for coming to school, greeting each other and instilling a sense of safety in our social studies classroom. They earned tangible rewards that the community donated and the kids' mood changed. Patrick W was a quiet kid with an anger that settled in his shoulders, jaw line, and fists. Every Friday, when he walked out, I said,” Patrick, I look forward to seeing you Monday”. I really wondered if he would make it back. He always did and by May we laughed because he knew I watched for him to walk down the hall on Monday morning. Chris B. was another reachable soul. He worked in the family business and after he graduated, he was shot in the back after running away from a robbery. I worked at Forest Meadow for 18 years.

I have so many school stories, a lot of successes. My best story is a student, Luis, a Dad, husband, son, brother to his family. I introduced a reading program, Corrective Reading, and he learned to read. It was a first period class and he often worked until midnight but he made it to class everyday. He learned to read that semester. He was graduating in May and had plans to work. I was ecstatic that he knew that reading was important and he made it happen for him.

Why did I move to San Angelo and take a job at Lincoln? I did it because I was following God’s path for me. It was clear that I was to return to my home. Lincoln special education was offered to me, teaching science, what a great job!! So, I believe that life has a way of working out. I was not inspired to be a teacher but the Lord had different plans for me and my career has been perfect. I care about kids, plain and simple. I believe the soft skills that we teach students are most important. Soft skills like hand shaking, looking others in the eyes, taking risks, laughing at mistakes, and working as a team. I teach at Lincoln Middle School and I love my Lincoln Middle School family. I’m so glad that I listen when the Lord speaks.
