8th Grade RLA and Media Publication
Dear Students and Families,
My name is Karla Campbell, and I am excited to be your 8th grade Media Publications and/or Reading Language Arts teacher this year. I am looking forward to getting to know each of you and experiencing all the opportunities this school year will bring.
I’d like to share a little about myself, including my background, interests, and family. My passion for teaching began when I was in first grade. My parents and I moved to the United States from Mexico without knowing any English. I vividly remember the frustration I felt trying to understand a new language, and how my mom and I would often feel overwhelmed because she could not help me understand it. It was my first-grade teacher, Mrs. Quintela, who changed everything for me. She spent countless hours after school helping me learn to speak, read, and write in English. Her kindness and dedication inspired me to become a teacher so that I could one day “pay it forward” to others.
Because of her influence, along with the encouragement of my parents and my grandfather, I graduated from Angelo State University in May 2002. This year marks the beginning of my 25th year in education, and I still feel the same excitement—and yes, even a few butterflies—that I did on my very first day of teaching.
When I have free time, I enjoy reading, shopping, and scrapbooking. Some of my favorite books include Tuesdays with Morrie, books by Rachel Hollis, poetry by Langston Hughes and Tupac, and short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Scrapbooking is especially meaningful to me because it allows me to capture and preserve memories. As my grandfather once told me, “Mija, take lots of pictures because one day all you will have left are the memories.” I miss my Buelito and all the wisdom he shared with me.
Above all, my family is the most important part of my life. I have been married for 24 years and am a proud mother of three sons. I love spending time with my boys and will likely share stories about Ryland’s funny antics, Sean’s musical talents on the saxophone (and great sense of humor), and Branden’s dedication to basketball. They are my world, and I am incredibly proud of each of them.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story—it truly means a lot. I am excited to work with you this year and watch you grow both academically and personally. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Campbell
