Why do I teach?
When I was young, my Grandparents taught me to read and write. My Grandmother always said that no matter where I was, if I could read, I could escape into fantastical places. When I went to Kindergarten, I had this teacher, Mrs. Graves, who encouraged me to take risks and ask questions. As my school years continued, I had many teachers who encouraged my love of learning and when I struggled, they supported me.
When I got to high school, I was asked to tutor some of my fellow students and as I worked with them, I began to realize that it was something I wanted to continue doing. To know that what I was doing was helping someone else be successful, gave me a sense of purpose. So, it wasn’t really hard for me to pick a major for college.
Now all these years later I still find joy in helping others and find my job rewarding. Each year I look forward to meeting the new students and getting to know who they are as a person. I want to provide them with a safe and supportive learning environment so that they can feel supported and confident in their learning. I hope to provide them with strategies and encourage them to take risks.
I know that math is not everyone’s forte, but I try to make the math relevant and reach them on the level they are on. I especially love teaching financial literacy as I believe it is one of the most important things that I can teach my students. My hope is that in the time that the students are in my class that they not only accomplish their goals but leave feeling better prepared for their future.
