Why?
My “why” started out with a simple desire to be around athletics. I knew that coaching was my calling in the seventh grade. But as I began to get older, my “why” began to evolve and develop into many “whys.”
My understanding of developing: Teacher/Student relationships, teamwork, mental toughness, life lessons, humility, huge wins, tough losses that being an effective coach is not about just collecting trophies. Coaching is about reinforcing a positive way of life.
As I take a step back and look at the bigger picture, each athlete is an opportunity to promote the traits listed in the previous paragraphs. Through my career some of the best memories I posses are not related to a scoreboard. But are the moments an athlete realizes they have accomplished the impossible.
Being blessed with the opportunity to take part in an individual’s accomplishments are more than enough of a “why” to justify teaching and coaching. Winning is AWESOME, Losing Sucks, but molding someone’s life journey is irreplaceable.
