Roles for Teens
There are many roles to choose from when volunteering for VBS at Saint Raphael Parish. Following are descriptions of the roles. When completing the application you will be asked to list your choice in order of preference.
Crew Leaders are part of a mini-team (typically 2-3 teens) that guide a Crew of children throughout the day. Crew Leaders should enjoy working with small children, be patient, attentive, and caring. They are responsible for helping their crew members have fun by participating, listening, and understanding the activities. The safety and wellbeing of the children is primary and involves taking attendance and ensuring children find their families at the end of the day.
Animators work with the Lead Animator in learning the songs and dances prior to VBS week. Animators are in front of the whole of VBS demonstrating songs and actions along with the Lead Animator. Animators are able to have additional roles at VBS such as Crew Leader, Station Helper, but not Tech/Computer Helper.
Station Helpers assist the Adult Station Leader with running one Station throughout the week. Helpers should have good listening skills, the ability to take direction, and work efficiently to setup/reorganize the Station between visiting Crews. These helpers are also responsible for explaining and encouraging participation of the visiting Crews. Stations include Snack, Crafts, Games, or Bible Stories.
Decorating/Setup Team assists with the creation of the environment in the PAC, entrance, and hallways of the Saint Raphael campus. Decorating takes placed the week prior to VBS typically in the afternoons from 1-3 p.m. The specific days and times vary based on the amount of help available.
What to expect after applying
Within minutes of completing your application the parent will receive an email stating the application was received. Once the application has been reviewed (by mid June) we will be in touch with the parent with details regarding roles and next steps for the Teen applicant.
How do I Apply?
The application is super simple and is completed online (see button above) It must be completed by Parents and Teens together! Parents will be providing the important safety and emergency details while Teens will be choosing roles and agreeing to a Teen Code of Conduct.

We appreciate your help and ask that you abide by our Teen Code of Conduct
By completing a Volunteer Application for VBS at Saint Raphael Parish, Teens are agreeing to the following Code of Conduct as noted in the application:
Teen Volunteers are expected to abide by the Teen Code of Conduct noted below:
Students are expected to be on-time and present for the entire event and not leave early except in the case of illness, emergency, or prior parental permission.
Students should receive permission from the Director of VBS (Terri Telepak), the Youth Minister (Zak Jester), or an Adult Station Leader before leaving early.
Students should respect other individuals and all Saint Raphael Church property. This includes peers, adult volunteers, parish staff, participating children, and all buildings, grounds, and equipment.
No student shall be in possession of or use tobacco products including chewing tobacco, cigarettes, and vapes/juuls.
No student shall be in possession of or under the influence of any alcohol or drugs. No student is permitted to bring any weapon or other materials that might endanger others.
The use of cell phones is limited to some specified roles. Otherwise phones are collected at the beginning of each VBS day.
These rules are in place to ensure all volunteers have fun and are truly present and open to each other as much as possible. Enforcement of rules is at the discretion of the Director and Youth Minister.
TEEN FAQs
Q: Why does the application ask for the Teen cellphone?
A: Within the application we ask for the Teen's cellphone number (if they have one) so that we may use Flocknote to send text reminders. If you choose, you may provide a parent cell instead, but know that if the Teen number is provided, phone numbers are never shared or visible to anyone outside the parish office and Parents will receive the same text as the Teen.
Q: If I apply am I automatically assigned a role at VBS?
A: No. All applications will be reviewed by Parish Staff, Adults, and Teachers to ensure applicants are a good fit for VBS and the roles requested.
Q: Why didn't I receive the email after completing the application?
A: All submissions are automatically sent an email to the parent email address upon completion. Please check your spam/junk mail folders. You may also email jgill@saintraphaelparish.com to inquire more.
Q: Can I change my role preferences if I already sent in my application?
A: Yes, but to do so you must email jgill@saintraphaelparish.com to specify your change and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Q: Who trains and supervises the Teen Volunteers?
A: Zak Jester and Cheryl McBride, our Youth Ministers
