Reading:
We continue to work on the Unit 3 Human Body Systems and Senses. The nonfiction Reader for Unit 3, entitled “How Does Your Body Work?,” consists of selections that will further students’ scientific understanding of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems of the human body. The role of various body parts and organs associated with each system, such as bones, joints, muscles, nerves, the spinal cord, and the brain, will be described. Students will also take an in-depth look at the senses of sight and hearing and the various body parts that enable these senses to function properly. The later chapters of the Reader will provide insight into difficulties that may occur when vision and/or hearing are impaired and how people cope with these challenges.
Math:
We will be finishing our Unit 2 on Multiplication Strategies before Christmas break. Students will be assessed the last week before break.
Religion:
We are reading about the Season of Christmas and Advent.

Reading:
We are finishing Unit 2 Animal Classification with an informational research animal report and culminating activity using task cards that will check for understanding of the unit 2 concepts and skills. We will begin Unit 3 Human Body Systems and Senses. We continue with Unit 2 focus will on multiplication and the different models of multiplication: arrays, equal groups, number line, and ratio tables. They will also apply the associative property and the distributive property to develop efficient, reliable, and generalizable strategies for multiplying.. Then we will move onto Unit 3 reviews and extends students' thinking about place value, multi-digit addition and subtraction and problem solving. Students will be introduced to idea of rounding 2 and 3 digit numbers to the nearest 10 and nearest 100. This sKill is extended into the realm of computations, as students use rounding as a s way to estimate and check the results of adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers.Important Dates for October

Reading:
We begin our next unit of study with Animal Classifications. We will be learning about nonfiction with stories related to animals. We will focus on main idea, author's purpose, compare/contrast, sequence of evenets, context clues, and cause and effect. Students will have their first Spelling test with this unit. In Grammar we will be students parts of speech.
Math:

Reading:
We begin a new Reading Series for our school. Our first unit is on Classic Tales. We will read an excerpt from The Winds of Willows along with Aladdin and Alice in Wonderland. We will compare and contrast characters, identify the theme, analyze characters, ask and answer questions with text evidence for support. Grammar and Spelling are also in this new curriculum. Spelling lists will begin with unit 2.
Math:
Unit 1: Addition and Subtraction PatternsAddition and subtractions facts through 20, double-digit addition, word problems and strategies. Students should be reviewing their addition and subtraction facts through 20.Number Corner Skills: identifying the calendar and date.
