Welcome to the 6th grade page!
The first year of middle school is full of new adventures and new experiences. We get lockers for the first time and switch classes in true middle school fashion. Mrs. Scanlon is the 6th grade homeroom teacher. You can meet the rest of our teachers in the "Meet the Teachers" tab at the top of the page.
One of the greatest challenges for middle school students is organization. They are expected to arrive in every class on time, with all of their materials, ready to learn. There are books, folders, notebooks, novels, pencil bags, water bottles and other supplies that they need to keep track of. Keeping their locker tidy can be a challenge with all of those supplies. It is our goal that by the end of 6th grade that they have a good handle on organizing not only their myriad of supplies but their time as well.
Study: Homework is generally given Monday through Thursday, occasionally on the weekends. Students should be using an assignment notebook to write assignments down. There is a board in the classroom on which we write homework daily. Students should copy this down in their assignment notebooks. This is the best way for students to remember what homework they have. Grades are recorded in Gradelink. It is important that parents check this regularly to monitor their student's progress. If parents need assistance accessing Gradelink they can contact the office.
Pray: We attend mass weekly, every Thursday. We gather with the entire school to celebrate mass together. When necessary, we can also attend mass virtually in our classrooms. The whole school also comes together to recite the rosary in October and May and to commemorate the Stations of the Cross during Lent. Our class recites the rosary at least once a month during Religion class and we dedicate time to quiet reflection and devotion.
Serve: We view service as our Christian duty that benefits the community. Throughout the year, 6th grade participates in different acts of service, including fundraisers and other acts of charity. In the past we have provided toiletries, socks, and gloves for the Detroit Rescue Mission. We have packed bagged lunches for the homeless and raised money for Breast Cancer awareness, just to name a few.
As part of the middle school, 6th graders have the opportunity to participate in some fun academic and social activities. There are dances for 6th - 8th graders, the Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee, Math Counts and Game Club just to name a few. There are numerous sports including cross country, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and cheer. Students can join the band or the choir if they are musically inclined. In the past they have had the opportunity to participate in essay or poster contests for a chance to earn cash and scholarship prizes. Sixth graders also attend Tamarack Adventure Camp in the Spring.
It's a busy year, but we surf through and manage to learn and have some fun at the same time. If you have any questions or would like to come visit us to see what we are really like, we look forward to hearing from you. Please call the school office at 734-284-6500 for a tour.
