Dido, Queen of Carthage, is a popular figure from the classical world who has endured well into the modern era, reinterpreted over and over again in both literature and art. Dido is a character that is constantly transformed, from her historical reality to the Aeneid, and then in different texts and pieces of art.Her suicide on a pyre is the most common sticking point in the various interpretations of Dido; however, her suicide is not the exclusive focus of every interpretation. The various interpretations of Dido offer valuable insight into conceptions of power and legitimacy over time.
