Welcome to Science Class!
“The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. Science brings men nearer to God.”
– Louis Pasteur
Goals:
Build solid base of scientific knowledge
Develop laboratory, math and critical thinking skills
Deepen appreciation for God’s work through study of His creation
Policies:
Students are expected to:
1. Follow all laboratory safety rules.
2. Show respect to all teachers and other adults.
3. Behave with integrity and honesty in schoolwork and interactions with others.
4. Arrive to class on time with all necessary materials.
5. Be friendly, cooperative and courteous to fellow students.
6. Work quietly and independently, unless instructed otherwise.
7. Keep Chromebooks closed, unless instructed otherwise.
During first trimester, violations of classroom rules will result in a warning, followed by deduction of a pride point in the passport. As the year progresses, students are expected to take greater responsibility for themselves, and passport points may be taken without prior warning. Certain violations, such as hitting, throwing things, blatant disrespect or horseplay in the lab, will result in loss of a point without warning at any time of year.
Grading:
Grading is on a total point system. Student progress will be assessed both formally and informally through graded and ungraded classwork, as well as quizzes and tests. There will be a test at the end of each unit.
Grades will be posted to PowerSchool weekly. Please check PowerSchool regularly.
All work must be turned in by the due date to receive full credit. Projects will receive a deduction of 10% of the total points per school day that they are late.
Absences:
If a student is absent due to illness, appointments, band or serving at Mass, they should check Schoology to obtain any notes or assignments that were missed. Assignments due the day of the absence should be turned in the next time the class meets.
Students who miss a test should contact Mrs. Lahneman to arrange a time for a makeup test. A missed quiz will usually be made up during the next science class period or during recess.
Schoology:
Notes and homework assignments will be posted to Schoology. In-class assignments may be posted to Schoology as well, depending on the nature of the assignment.
Labs:
We will be conducting many labs throughout the school year. Students will earn a participation grade for labs, based on active participation in the laboratory procedures and observance to all safety procedures.
The year begins with instruction on laboratory safety procedures and equipment. Students are expected to follow all lab safety procedures throughout the year. Failure to follow safety procedures may result in a deduction of points on the lab grade and/or deduction of pride points in the passport.
