About FIRST Robotics

What is FIRST Robotics Competition?

Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. We call FIRST Robotics Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.”

Under strict rules, limited resources, and an intense time limit, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Each season ends with an exciting FIRST Championship. - First.org

2018 FRC Season

FIRST Power UP

FIRST Power Up involved a central task of scoring "power cubes." into a variety of different goals. The challenges demanded a robot that was able to extend a mechanism high in the air, or become efficient in scoring power cubes in low vaults. There was also an additional climbing challenge which required robots to pull themselves up on a thin metal bar during the last thirty seconds of the match.

FIRST STEAMWORKS

FIRST Steamworks involved a variety of challenges that included propelling "fuel" into high and low boilers. Another main challenge was placing gears onto the airship to prepare it for takeoff. The final challenge in the competition occured in the last 30 seconds of the match, and the robot had to scale a five foot rope to "board the airship."

FIRST STRONGHOLD

Rugged terrain. Ramparts. Castle Doors. These were just some of the many obstacles that were defending the stronghold on each team. Teams had to generate innovative designs to overcome a multitude of daunting obstacles. In addition, robots had to shoot "boulders" into the high or low castle ports to take down the stronghold. Teams also had the option of scaling the opponents stronghold in order to gain additional points.

2015 FRC Season

FIRST RECYCLE RUSH

Totes on toes on totes! The 2015 competition involved amassing large towers of totes with a special twist. Teams had the option of first picking up a recycling can and placing a pool noddle in it for additional points on top of the tote tower. The first few seconds of the match usually resulted in teams battling out for four recycling cans, in which the robot had to quickly grasp the can and pull it towards the corresponding side.
