Grade 8 College, Career, Budget

Objectives:

Language Arts: Students practice outlining skills while researching specific topics of interest to them. Students write for information and understanding to communicate facts, data, and processes.

Career Planning: Students research local colleges to attend, careers to evaluate, and how to create a budget when employed.

Math: Students use spreadsheet software to create a budget with formulas for subtracting taxes, mortgage, college loans, utilities, etc.

Real-Life Connections: Students will learn how to research and evaluate the best college for them according to location, student life, academic majors, and tuition.

Unifying Concepts and Processes: Students will make connections regarding educational training and the career they plan to undertake in the future.

Tools and Technology: Students utilize appropriate sources to research and report on colleges and careers. Students learn the value of the Web Site, www.fafsa.ed.gov for initial application for financial aid.

Critical Thinking and Discussion: Students will write essay analyzing aspects of chosen college and discuss one on one with teacher the reasons assessed.

In the Library you will complete an Interest/Skills Survey to determine your interests in a future

career. Please choose one of the careers for this activity.


College Research:

You will research colleges that offer academic programs to prepare you for a career, as well as other personal considerations, such as sports, tuition and location. After spending some time looking at colleges, please select one institution from your research.

Assignment:

Use the outline below to sketch out information about the college.

Write a 2-3 paragraph essay (at least 5 sentences in a paragraph) to communicate this information and determine that the college will suit your needs academically and socially.

Create a new word processing doc in Google Drive that will be turned in to Classroom

3. The location of the college.

4. The courses of study offered.

5. The sports/athletics programs offered.

6. The tuition to attend this college.

7. A brief history of the college or items of interest.

Essay:

Begin a new page on the same Google Doc where you did your outline. Use Insert/Break/Page Break.

Write 2-3 paragraphs using this outline, including information about the area of study that pertains to your career.

If time permits, we will record interview videos.

Career Assignment

Please download the Word document below. Use it as a guide to create a script for your job

interview. You will answer the questions about one of the careers that you researched. An

interviewer will ask you questions, and a third classmate will record the interview on video.
